She is a rescue dog and was not taken good care of. She was bred twice w/ a litter of 10 puppies each time. Her puppies have not been with her for 2 weeks, so she hasn't been nursing.

A very large percentage of unspayed dogs get cancer in their mammary glands. But if you have not noticed this engorgment as you call it I would more think of it being a clogged milk duct or mastitis. Yes I would take her to a vet as she may need antibiotics if she does have mastitis.I am very familiar with cancerous tumors of the mammary glands. They start out small and continually grow. I have had several removed but have never had a dog recover, each time I was only prolonging the inevitable. I would find it hard to believe that you would not have noticed this before she whelped if it was a tumor. I really think it is due to the fact that she is now making milk. People are really doing their animals a huge favor by spaying BEFORE the first heat. We all like puppies but as long as there is one homeless animal on this earth we should not be making any more.

It's tough to say without looking at it but I'd guess that one of two things are happening.

Your dog may have a minor infection or she may not have dried up completely after the pups were weaned and may have produced a small amount of residual milk.

It's something that a vet needs to check out. Neither condition is difficult to treat, but the treatments are different so it requires a vet to evaluate it and figure out what you're dealing with.

TAKE HER TO THE VET!!!
this could be mastitis and i am not sure if it is safe for puppies to nurse off of her when she has this. it is an infection that gets into the mammary gland that is very painful to dogs. i had a dog that had this and i took her to the vet but i waited to long and the teat rotted off. but we saved her and the puppies.

Have the vet check her to make sure it's not an infection.

Her pups were taken away at 5 weeks? That's way too early.

She could have mastitis, or an infection in her mammary gland, or she could just be simply engorged. always a good idea to check with the vet.

Try warm compress on it. It will help relieve the swelling. If that doesn't work call your vet.
