I recently tried to dye my hair from its natural light brown to an ash blonde and instead ended up with a very brassy reddish/yellowish blonde. Any advice on how to get the brassiness to tone down to something a little lighter or how to get it to an ash blonde without stripping all of the color first?

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what to choose as the best answer, but for anyone looking for advice on the same topic, here's what I did: When I dyed it, I used a light ash blond color. I did go to a salon to fix it. They used a purple "nutralizer" to tone down the brassiness (and said I could have done the same at home with a shampoo). It is still kind of brassy, but much much better. I also got partial ash blonde highlights put over it and it looks really really good (and no, I would not have tried to do the highlights myself, I've heard too many stories from my friends that end with big discolored blotches all over their heads). Thanks again for all the advice!

If you want to change the color to something else, I'd see a stylist. Ash blonde is a difficult shade to achieve on your own - it often goes gray or bluish.

To tone down the brassiness, I use a color control shampoo. I personally use Aveda's blue malva shampoo and conditioner, but any purple shampoo would work. It's a deep purple, and over time neutralizes the reddish hues.

You can also go to a salon and have it toned down.

Did you do this with a home solution? And, did the color name actually have the word "ash" in it? That is important. I am also light brown naturally and have always used "natural ash blonde" or something similar and occasionally I do get a red tint but only in the sunlight. If this was a home solution, on the box they always put an 800 number...I would call that number and ask them what to do....they have been very helpful to me in the past. Good luck!

Either go to a salon where they know what they are doing or else most pharmacists/grocery shops sell toners which get rid of any brassy tones and make it more of an ash blonde.
My advice.. whenever changing hair colours go to a salon as the stuff they sell at shops is usually cheap and nasty... take this as well known advice... i used to do hairdressing.

Please go to a salon!!! I have been doing hair for more than 20 years! But the time you finish "playing" with your dye, you will have a mess! It will cost you much, much more to fix than it will to have it done right in the first place! TRUST ME! If you keep trying you may end up with brassy roots white mid-shaft and muddy ends. you may even have to cut more than you want to fix it!!! Corrective color is expensive and if it is a big mess, your results could take some time... GO TO A SALON!!!

properly relying on how till now you dyed it blonde if it replaced into in the final month this is beneficial to attend atleast a month before you dye it lower back otherwise your hair ought to fall out from to lots coloring. otherwise if it incredibly is been longer then a month you're you able to in basic terms ought to get the brown you pick for and dye it like favourite. i had blonde bangs and that they became brass and that i tryed the toner and it didnt do something for me so i in simple terms dyed all my hair black/brown and my bangs tournament my hair appropriate. i'm hoping this facilitates :)
