Is it possible that a guy who is a close friend is afraid of screwing something up between us? He has told me this before, and I didn't initiate the conversation, that he didn't want to loose me as a friend. His relationships always crash and burn, and he ends up hating his ex (she usually hates him too). Do guys always see things as "I don't want to date you, therefore I'm not that into you?" or is it possible to have strong feelings and just be afraid of loosing a friend?

It depends on his personality. If he is a bit of a shy guy then it may be true that he is afraid of losing the friendship. Usually, this kind of line is an exuse. Men are hunters, they go for what they want regardless. If he really wanted to enjoy a relationship with you, he probably would have taken the jump by now. Stop wasting time fretting about him and explore other options. If you are stuck on him, your heart will remain closed to better opportunities.

He knows he's not good at relationships, but realizes that to go any further intrudes into that boy-girl physical/emotional world. He wants you but knows how it might end and would rather keep you as a friend than have it end like that.

Both. From my experience it is better to keep the person as a friend.
