It means that they don't understand the value of a "Volunteer Military". They may on the other hand, might just be an unpartiotic jerk. I take it that you are a Marine. Good For you! I am proud of you for that decision. You help to protect the jerks freedom to think "that's a waste of time." Next time that situation happens you could tell them, "To bad you feel that way. I suppose it's a waste to spend any of MY TIME with you" and then walk away.

This has actually happened to me a few times. I'm joining the air force, and people are telling me all the time that it's a waste of time. The worst was when I was actually dating a marine, and my best friend would tell me all the time that the marine was throwing his life away, and i shouldn't have wasted my time on him. I hate it because to me, serving my country is one of he greatest things i could ever do, and I would really appreciate it if everyone could support us.

No job is a waste of time, and I know that the Marines have a particularly tough training program. The person was thoughtless and made a flippant remark. You are trying to make something of your life which requires a sacrifice of your personal life, this should be respected regardless of whether I or anyone else agrees with the choices.

Well, unless you enjoy being a marine, that's what it is. I am very familiar with "waste of time" military, as we have national service here. I got officer training so I was there for a year, however this did postpone my studies a lot.

And also, it is not a year I am getting back, There are things that you could do in the same time that would benefit your a great amount more.

If you are a Marine, I'm proud of you and of all the military serving our country. Don't let anyone tell you it's a waste of time. They are just mislead. You are doing this country and them a great service and should be proud of what you are doing. Keep up the GREAT work!!!

Marines are awesome! I was in the US Army for 4 years and when I got out I was working at this job and some guy working there overheard a conversation I was having with someone else and later asked me why I went into the military? I told him my reasons, and he said, I was stupid for being in the military. He was just a dumb *** loser. He said his father was in Vietnam and his father told him to never go into the military. It would be better for him to go on Welfare. I stayed as far away from this loser as I could the whole time I was working there.
Some people just can't handle the military, they would rather do dead end jobs, than do something for their country.

It means they wouldn't be interested in it nor would they be likely to be supportive or care about someone who is a Marine.
It means they have some preconceived notions about the decision you have made.
It means they think that having a defense of our Great Country is a waste of time and that they wouldn't bother to defend it.

Well, it means this is a rude and thoughtles person. People have strong feelings about the military, especially during war time. Of course it isn't your fault we are at war, nor is it a bad thing that you chose to join the military. But people get confused and think you are eager to have war or welcome violence and bloodshed, or that your politics are terrible. But a waste of time? What a terrible thing to say!

It means they are unAmerican pieces of trash that we wish would get just exactly what they need and deserve. And that would be a death sentence in a prison run by Saddam and his sons. The marines are great and you should be proud. We love all you guys.
