i am planning to have a quiet family wedding for my daughter and throw a party for friends and relatives in the evening.

You need to send two separate invites. The family and friends invited to the party afterward, but not to the wedding might be offended or think they are not good enough. I would send formal invitations to the wedding and reception to the close family and then just send party/reception invitations to distant relatives and friends. It might not create a separation in the family and friends that way! Hope this helps!

We are doing something a little bit different also. We are getting married April 11th, and only inviting parents, siblings, and grandparents, to our ceremony. Then on April 21st, we are having an open reception to all family and friends. Instead of doing wedding invitations, we've only done reception invitiations, and have invited our family by word of mouth to our actual ceremony.

tend to get concerned when i hear of parents saying they are planning their child's wedding. I wonder if the parents are taking into consideration just what sort of celebration it is that the young couple want themselves.( as someone who makes wedding dresses - I have encountered lots of brides who are stressed over trying to please parents, etc.)
That being said It is good to see that you are planning a relatively quiet affair.

suggestions for invite.something informal along the lines of

"""I/we would like to invite you to join with our other friends & family in celebration of the marriage of "jane & Joe". They are planning a small intimate ceremony prior to this; but would like to have those important to them come together to share their joy at a party at : time ; date; venue

Yours sincerely
mary & david

Alternatively if you are in the habit of hosting parties then just invite those people along to a party - without giving the real reason ( call it a re-union) & then have the couple enter & announce their marriage.
(though there would be NO GIFTS) at this sort of event

I'm not quite clear on what type of event you're hosting. Is this a party that will take place well after the wedding, or immediately following?
