Actually that is an "old wive's tale" or misnomer at best. Dogs DO like cats and visa versa. Humans decided that because of the differences in personalities that automatically dogs do not like cats and the other way around as well. I have on more than one occasion owned both dogs and cats at the same time and they got along very well.
The differences are that cats are mainly aloof and have almost a superior attitude where as the dog is very social and willing to please. But they do get along.

It depends on the breed of dog, and whether they have grown up with cats around. We have always had many cats and a dog, and our dogs have always got on with the cats. My present dog is best friends with one of my cats and are always playing with each other, and sometimes snuggle up together when they sleep. And thinking of an old photo, we had a dog and cat that would share the same basket, and seemed very content with one another.

However, my sisters dog would go for a cats neck if it ever saw one, just because of the nature of its breed.

So it really does depend on breed, and lifestyle whether its been brought up and happy around cats as to whether dogs like cats!

Dogs LOVE cats. Cats don't love dogs! The fact of it is, their body language is completely opposite. A dog raises it's paw to play, a cat raises it's paw to strike. A dog growls when upset, a cat purrs in contentment. A dog wags his tail when happy, a cat swishes his in anger or irritation.

They just need to learn the other's language!

Ha! well, in most cases that's true. but OMG!!! did u guys see on the web??! k, this is kinda sick but this like, Indian lady said her cat mated with a dog. but the weird thing is, when the cat gave birth, 3 of the offsprings were cats and the other three were dogs. All the kittens died but the dogs stayed alive.

hmmm...weird, no? so maybe cats and dogs get along after all....

I agree with Hayahelp.
My dog gets along with our cat and the neighbors cat. He is willing to play with any cat, its just that they run away from him just like most cats would run away from a human they don't know.
Then the dog thinks its a game, mine loves to chase squirrels.

i dont know if its a case of not liking each other!! i have a dog and two cats, the dog is actually scared of the cats if they look her in the eyes!, but if they run away she will chase them. i think its just instinct on both parts to run and to chase!!
