Apparently the stress of Christmas is showing it's marks on me. When I get cold sores I never even "feel the tingle" first. I just woke up yesterday morning and have one huge blister and about 5 or 6 tiny ones. I mean it's taking over the bottom half of my lip!! In the past I have tried Campo phenique and abreva with no luck. the last time I had one this bad it lasted for 3 months. I have an awful problem with them spreading (it's absolutely disgusting and embarassing!) Is it better to pop them and put alcohol in them or will that just make it worse? ~~ anyone know of any home rememdies? I still have some campo phenique that I am using, but I can't see myself spending $15 on another tiny tube of Abreva that did not even work last time! THANKS!

I guess you know that they are caused by a virus. that virus remains permanently in your body and moves into your nervous system close to the lips. It will lie dormant there until it is triggered by fever, a cold or other virual infection, exposure to sun and wind, stress, or depression of your immune system.
I would suggest you start building up your immune system. I would also suggest you talk to your doctor because if you get outbreaks often it could have something to do with a low thyroid function. I would suggest 500 mg twice daily of L-Lysine (if you are over 18). But DONT TAKE LYSINE for longer than 6 months at a time or IF YOU ARE NURSING OR PREGNANT.. Also get a good Vit. B complex. Zinc but no more than 100 mg a day. (make sure you count any of the extra Zinc that might be in other supplements you are taking. Garlic pills act as a natural antibiotic and help the immune system and so does Vit. C. Lemon balm to put on your lips is good.

BUT FIRST make real sure that what you are dealing with are cold sores. I would suggest you see a dermatologist. I treated what I thought was a cold sore for months and finally went to a dermatologist that said it wasn't a cold sore. So be real careful with self treatments.

ok without preaching...don't stress out so much...let things happen the way they do and don't take on anything more than you can handle. It's for your own good before, during and after.

as far as a remedy goes, when it comes to cold sores, if you see it then it's too late. Most products on the market are geared toward the application of the product at tingling time to shorten the life span. after that it needs and will most likely take it's course. picking it will just spread and although it hurts, I would say just putting rubbing alcohol on it will disinfect it as well as to keep it nice and dry. sorry 'bout that. i hate them to..you can't give your child love and affection or your life partner. :(

Trust me when you feel the tingle, spray a little starting fluid for car engines on a Q tip, do this several times a day, now don't be smoking when you do this. May sound crazy but it works.

Try getting a bottle of Sea breeze (The blue face cleaning stuff), put it on a cotton ball and dab it on the cold sore. That works for me, it drys it up faster so it can heal.

I get these inside my mouth sometimes. I take Zovirax which clears them up in a few days. It is a perception drug and your doctor will have to prescribe it for you. I also use CMPD DEXAMETH/LIDO/TETRACYCLINE it is also a perception but you take a teaspoon of this and swish it around in you mouth and it kills the pain. Hope this helps.
