Pneumococcal disease is caused a bacteria that everyone carries in their nose but most never develop the invasive disease. Why do some develop the disease? This is not always known. The three major conditions caused by invasive pneumococcal disease are pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. They are all caused by infection with the same bacteria, but have different symptoms.

Before the vaccine, pneumococcal disease caused serious disease in children under age 5 in the U.S. Children under 2 were are most risk for contacting the disease. The routine schedule for pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is 4 doses, given at the following ages:
2 months
4 months
6 months
12-15 months.

Is it really necessary? Only your doctor/pediatrician can answer that but it sure would be worth it since the causative bacterium can cause such life threatening illnesses (pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis).

How much the vaccine costs would vary from state to state and doctor to doctor so your best bet would be to call around and see where you can get it for the best price.
