If you want a tv 106cm (42") or larger, plasma is the way to go. Rich colours, larger screen size capabilites (currently up to 65") high reliablilty (can last as long as tube tv's now). Plasmas are also very heavy so it should be put in one spot and stay there. Also don't watch any TV with watermarks or other permanant screen features for at least 200 hours after first use to reduce the risk of burn-in (the permanant etching of TV on your screen)

If you want a smaller screen, make sure you get an LCD TV which is not a dodgy no-name or wrip-off name brand with at least 1366 x 768 resolution. The highest resolution you can get is true HD at 1920 x 1080 resolution. LCD's are alot lighter and not at risk of burn-in like plasmas. Their only problems is they don't display blacks as well and some models cannot handle blur too well.

If you buy either TV, make sure you get a HD digital set top box for excellent picture quality and use better cables such as HDMI and Component (red, blue and green video cables instead of the single yellow video cable).

Plasma tvs are rocketing down in price ,due to the emergence of LCD,and some great bargains can now be had ,in most of the later plasmas,or higher spec older plasmas ,the burn in on the screen,is eliminated by a built in programme that moves any permanent image to different parts of the screen ,periodically to stop burning,it produces a better picture ,and will usually last well over the 5 years people are mentioning. LCD on the other hand are improving rapidly and are much lighter in weight, and dropping in price and certainly,on smaller screen size, upto 37" are a better buy,if you are going for the big screen I think Plasma still rule the roost and have a proven history,LCD still have a bit to go in the large department .
hope that helps.

LCD I've had a Plasma and it went wrong with 8 months! If I hadn't had insurance the bill would have been £400! Then again it went wrong a year later and this time was written off by the insurance company as an uneconomical repair! I've replaced with an LCD as I've learnt these are a lot more reliable AND they use a third of the power of a Plasma

LCD.... LCD's are a little more expensive (Price coming down VERY rapidly) But you don't have to worry about burn in. I honestly don't know why anyone WOULD want to buy a plasma now. Vizio is going to be releasing a 47" LCD TV around the time of the Super Bowl for less than $2000 bucks. Whats REALLY COOL? It's going to be 1080p! Throw in HDMI and you'll be set for Xbox360 or PS3 goodness! I spent 2400 plus s/h for my 42" Sceptre lcd...It's nice but I think I'm going to be upgrading as soon as Vizio kicks out their new set.

I personally like LCD after I won a Sony LCD TV off of http://linkachi.com/?0ad . It is said that Plasma TV's will go after 5-6 years because of the lack of a picture tube. But reguardless try out that site, they give away 1 tv every 100 days. And its a simple email enter.

like anything its swings and roundabouts.

Plasma give the best picture, but degrade over the years, and will probably need re-gassing after about 5 years. I would guess that there will be a whole new industry within the next few years for all the plasma TVs that need re-gassing.

LCD gives a poorer picture but will last longer than Plasma.

So depends on whether you are prepared to pay out for the quality picture or want convenience.

Plasma=Great picture, no movement pixilation, enourmous sizes, price
The bad: Burn in, not designed for games, short lifespan on picture.
Plasma's are organic so the organic material that shows color will die.

LCD=LArge varity of TV's, from front to rear projection, lighter, no burn in, long life spans up to 20 years on some.
The Bad: GHosting with movement, price, and size.
LCD is a crystal display and on rear projection TV's the bulb can be replaced if it burns out. Flat panels can be seen from every angle.

Don't get a plasma because if recurring image is on the screen such as a health bar on a video game the image will burn into the screen after an hour or so

Go for LCD, definetly.

If you watch a channel with the logo permently in the corner, it will burn forever onto a plasma tv.
