Yeah, I'm a Special Forces Medic, tell him you're proud of him and that he made a good choice. There is a big responsibility in being Doc., you're the mommy of the group, as well as Dr. Phil, and you're never sick, or hurt, their lives depend on you. Always seek to know more. Learn medicine and your soldiers, teach them, so that they, if need be, will save your life one day. Tell him to do his best, it'll help him sleep easier at night when things don't work out, if he ever gets to a combat unit. When he goes to A.I.T. in San Antonio, TX. tell him to go to the river walk every chance he gets and have fun and enjoy life because when he gets to his unit he'll be working his tail off and he'll have that to think back on. Plus the girl guy ratio is 10:1 ha ha just kidding! That's a rumor he'll hear in Basic. it's more like 5:1. Good luck Sir.

a medic can see just as much combat as an infantyman. Also, an army medic learns skill equivilant to that of an emt. if he wants to do something in the medical feild, i would suggest being a medical equipment repairer. It is a year long school to learn the job, and he will receive college credits, and in the civilian sector, it is a high paying, in-demand job. An even better opportunity for him is to check out some college ROTC programs to become a nurse. His shool will be paid for by the army, and he will have a 6 year commitment to the army after graduation and will become an officer, which makes way more than enlisted members, and will likely spend alot of time working stateside in a hospital, and if he does deploy, it will be to a relatively safer area because he can only work in a hopital.

My husband is a medic. He loves it. Although if your son doesn't want to see alot of war he should rethink it. There is a common misconsception that medics work in clinics or hospitals. I don't know of any. He will be on the line in iraq and see alot of scarey stuff. Although the great thing about being a medic is the rest of the unit watches your back alot closer...they will do whatever they can to keep the medic safe...they might need him later!

I was a crew chief on a UH-60 Blackhawk (hence, my handle) and I was in a medevac unit at Fort Hood for two years. I worked closely with the medics. What type of advice is he looking for? Email me if necessary.

I have a friend that used to be a medic. He didn't reenlist after he got back from his deployment to Iraq. He said that the carnage he saw as a medic was too much to handle.

I saw a show on that once. Its not that easy but I also ran into someone ousted. The live tests are tough then you have to be approved thru a civilian paramedic program after daily work. If you are cool and purposeful you can make it.
