The name Israel was given to Jacob, Abraham's grandson, by God. The name "Jew" is from the land of Judah, which was the capitol of the southern kingdom for a long time.
As the Bible tells us, most of the Jews did not accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah at first. Therefore, an orthodox Jew, or one that holds to only the old testament, would still be called a Jew.
A person must accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to carry the name of "Christian". I hope this helped.

After WWII, Israel was a nation made to accomodate the Jews, by the Western countries. At the time the land was Palastine, and was taken from them to form Israel. There are Christians in Israel, but far fewer than the Jews or Muslims.
The majority of Jews there now have exercised their right of return, which says that any Jew can go to Israel and be a citizen. There are rules for the right of return, something like the mother of a person must be Jewish if he/she is to be able to exercise that right. This is mainly why Israelis are Jewish.
You should try to read up on the middle east from a variety of sources to overcome inevitable bias in the accounts that are laid out. It is an area that you should at least be aware about, and have an idea of what is going on. But I hope this answers your question!

Some are both. In Jesus day a large company of Levitical priests became obedient to the faith (of Jesus Christ as the High Priest and blood atonement and Messiah). Some I know of, their families disowned them for becoming Christians. I'm not sure how many Israelis are Jews but probably the majority are due to the land ownership laws.

WIth the way you are using the word, as a religious identification rather than an ethnic one, your question is based on a mistake. Most Israelis aren't Jews, they are agnostic or undiferentiated theists.
As an ethnic identity, they are Jews.

Simply put...Israel was set up in the 1950's to be a homeland for the Jewish people. Of course there are Christinas the live there, some are even second or third generation, but it IS mainly a Jewish country.

Some of them are Christians and some are not. As many religions are practiced within the local cultures in every local region, so are they also in Israel.

According to Ezekiel 38 - 39 the Jewish people will go back to their land in the end time in unbelief of their Messiah. It will not be until Christ returns that they will see Him and convert to Him.

Jews do not believe that the Messiah has come yet. They still believe in the prophesy, however, but do not recognize Jesus as one person of the trinity.
