Your best bet is to visit the martial arts schools in your area to see what's available and what interest you. You will find addresses in your local telephone book/yellow pages. You will also find information in your local leisure centre/community hall.
If all else fails, buy a copy of 'Martial Arts Illustrated' magazine at WH Smith (UK). There are loads of classified ads besides it being a great martial arts mag. Failing that, there is also the internet. Hope this is of assistance to you. : ¬ )

Look for a specific type of martial art. If you are not sure, it may depend on your body shape and purpose you want it for.
For defence, some Security companies prefer rugby players to some Martial arts black belts. Some students would hit hard, but can't get hit without wanting to stop the fight. Useless in a real fight.
Some use a lot of hand strikes: (Karate, Kick Boxing, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do). This needs getting your fist hard to hit harder
Some use a lot of kicks: (Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Kick Boxing, Akido, Karate) a kick is 7 times harder, but 7 times slower. You may not hit your target, but if you do, it will hurt them more than a punch
Some use throws: (Judo, Sumo) If you are heavy, get close and get them on the ground.
Some use grabs: (Akido) arm locks can control a larger person.
Some learn weapons: (Kendo, Ninja) Make sure you are well insured if you want to use this against anyone

Yahoo yellowpages usually has lots of good info on finding local businesses.
Some tips for going to check out schools, ask if you can watch. If it looks like a good school, don't be afraid to ask if you can try it for a few months to make up your mind.
IMO, don't go anywhere that asks you to sign a contract, at that point you're stuck whether you like the school or not.
Have fun!
