Don't feel bad. The person who actually was stupid enough to give a living, feeling, helpless dog to a person with no clue as a present is clueless. It's not your fault but now it's your responsibility.

These two should get you started. Either is good for new dog owners.

And don't do any Caesar Millan things to your dog, especially if it's a puppy. Fear and intimidation has no place in a dog's life.

Dude, there are no books you really need to read,or links to link on,not really. If you need grooming or diet then yea maybe a book. If you have the dog for breeding or show then you may need a book. But since the dog was a gift I believe the dog is a friend. Now have you ever had a friend come with instructions. Just for now become friends ..Get to know each other first. You never know you just may not need to strain your eyes reading. I love cats too, but a dog becomes a unconditional friend. forever faithful. That's just my take on it Later.....

Just go to the book store and buy some books. It's also good to talk to an animal behaviorist at the SPCA if you live in America. I don't know about the UK. I hope they have them. Or just type in dog training on your search engine and it will take you to some links.

i have 4 cats and 2 dogs they all get along great together. I find that if you get a puppy it is easier for the cats to get used to it. Let them play together, and eat together. You'll find that after awhile they will become the best of friends and they will protect each other.

Couple of quick websites: www.dogage.com, http://www.dogclub.co.uk/site/index.php
The sites are okay for some basic info for some one starting out, as for books look for something that has the recommendation of AKC or ASPCA on it. Just relax, dogs are easy and very trainable. You can train them to use a litter box just like a cat, you just have to be patient.

extra of a canines man or woman, see you later as I have the room for it. canines are stunning yet human beings have their personal options. i imagine possibly extra human beings personal cats because not anybody has the room or time for canines. Cats make their personal agenda and dont choose you to be round perpetually. canines receives lonely yet they are very affectionate. They bark to guard you, not all of them slobber and stink and canines will save you in additional beneficial structure. you'd be extra weak to exercising and luxuriate in it once you've a canines. Cats are cool, and that i have had some cool cats yet they are in many circumstances truly chilly too. Going the position they choose, at the same time as they choose and how they choose. canines are mans superb chum, nonetheless authentic as we talk. For me besides.
