Forget the pet shop junk.

Take your dog to the vet for testing. Then ask for something like Interceptor or HeartGuard.. They're excellent once a month preventatives.

OTC meds usually don't get all the different types of worms. Ivomec can be very dangerous if not given correctly. If your dog is positive for heartworms and you give them Ivomec, you can cause a massive kill of the heartworm larvae, and your dog could die from it. Also Collie breeds can't take straight ivomec. It will kill them. Please don't try this. Go to the vet and get Drontal Plus for the intestinal and tapeworms. And make sure your dogs is negative for heartworm and start them on a monthly prescription dewormer. It will get heartworms and most intestinal worms. The generic, Iverheart Plus will get hooks, rounds, tapes, and heartworms. It is very new, only been out a month or so, and some vets may not carry it.

It would depend mostly on what type of worms your dog has. Let the vet determine, and treat the worms. I personally like pyratel from my vet, as it kills all worms, save heart worms. Once your dog's worm issue is treated, a great preventative is ivomec. It is an OTC wormer for cattle/swine/horses. Use the liquid form. Weigh your dog, and use a 10th of a cc/ml for every 10lbs of body weight. Just shoot the liquid on top of their food, or use one of the hollow treats designed to medicate your dog. DO NOT INJECT DIRECTLY INTO YOUR DOG! The person above that warned you about OTC medicines being ineffective is undereducated. ivomec contains the same active ingredient as most wormers you get from your vet. As a professional teacher/trainer and having bred up until 2 years ago, I have had incredible results with Ivomec.
Best Wishes!

You don't even have to take the dog to the vet, just a fecal sample. Have it tested so you know what type of worms need to be treated. Then the vet will test it and prescribe the correct med and dosage. Don't forget to weigh the dog.

There are meds you can get without seeking out a vet but they are not very good and very effective. I think it's very important to seek a vet and get the right kind and dose of meds for your pet. They go by dogs weight and it is a type of poison they ingest to kill the worms. If the wrong dose is given you can harm or even kill your dog. See a vet and sleep better.

The one that the vet prescribes for the type(s) worms that your dog has. Do NOT use OTC dewormers..they are ineffective and can be dangerous to your dog. Also you should know what type(s) of worms you are dealing with before deworming. Not all dewormers are for all types of worms. The only way to know exactly waht you are dealing with is to take a stool sample in to the vet and have a fecal test done.

over the counter=yucky and waste of money
veterinarian prescribed=happy dog and happy owner
keep in mind that parasites are transmittable to humans and if you get the yucky dewormer, it may not work...then you are risking getting roundworms or hookworms...make sure your dog is on heart worm preventative too. This will significantly reduce parasite infestation!!Good luck!
