Queen Anne helped the British gin industry in the 18th century by raising import taxes on foreign wines and spirits and lowering taxes on British spirits. The flavour of English gin suited the British palate very well and soon became England's national drink - the dry English style also began to develop around this time.allabout

Scotland has Scotch
Ireland has Whiskey

Although the answer to your question is Gin, there's a little history to how England got it.

Gin was invented by Dr. Sylvius in Holland. It was invented to help cure Kidney and Bladder illnesses. English soldiers stole the drink and returned to home with them after the wars in the Netherlands. It was first called "Genievere", French for Juniper coming from the Juniper Berry which is the key ingredient to flavoring Gin. Later, back in England the name was shortened to "Gen" and later to Gin.

If you're in Scotland and Ireland, you drink "whisky" not "whiskey." And any Scot will tell you so.

In England, it's claret, sherry, ales and beer.

And, as others mentioned, gin. For me, nothing's better than a Blue Sapphire dirty martini. Yum. Thanks, England!
