Using cosmetics that have expired can irritate your skin, even causing breakouts or infections. An expired product won't perform as when you first bought it.
For example, if u use expired mascara, eyeliner or eye shadow you 'll risk eye infection.
Experts recommend replacing mascara three months after purchase.
Why?
Of all makeup products, mascara is the most prone to microbial growth. Not only can expired mascara lead to an eye infection, it also can dry out your lashes.
If mascara becomes dry, throw it away. Don't add water to moisten it. That will bring bacteria into the product.
Expired creams can cause rashes or irritation.
Eyeshadow: If it starts to break up, it's time for a replacement. But no matter what, you should toss eyeshadow after six months because eyes are more vulnerable to bacteria.
Expired foundation can cause bacterial contamination and uneven application.
So, don't use expired products
I have a list about how long to keep mascara:
Foundation:don't use it more than 6 months
Blush:6 months
Mascara: 4 weeks
Lipstick: 3 months
Eye pencil/ lip liner: 6 months
Eye shadow: 12-14 months

I do it all the time. Makeup lasts me ages. Not that I dont use it-- I just use it lightly.
A word on expiration dates-- they are always set for the safest possible margin of error. Meaning, things last way longer than the expiration date. Almost everything-- not milk!! LOL. But medicines, eggs, makeup, so many things are safe past the date. But they put the date on to make sure there is no possiblity, if I make sense.
Makeup is also not exactly dangerous, even past the date, just because its old. My main concern with makeup is sharing, since other peoples health concerns might breed in my old makeup.
Use with confidence girl.
And I just HAD to come back to add, OMG. I am almost 40 years old. I keep my makeup until it runs out. QUite frankly, who can afford to replace it according to the guidelines below in one answer? And, furthermore, I have NEVER had an allergic reaction, infection, rash, or anything. Nor has my mother, or many other women who do not think that everything has to be rich and high class to be good enough. Now, realistically, some people, a rare few, might have problems. But thats true of anything. I know for a FACT that expiration dates are a 'worst case scenario' thing. And, by the way, I look pretty good in my makeup too. Do you few who think its *dangerous* somehow imagine the makeup knows the date its *supposed* to go bad? Sheesh... people need to use their minds and *think.*
If you are scared to use it, throw it away. If not, I bet ya 20 that its ok. Gee, i swear that its not like some of these people are declaring. But then, they probably think they will get the bird flu or some such thing too. And the chances are about as great...

Sur, you can generally tell if the stuff is ok. Expiration dates are only a guideline how things should remain on the store shelf, not the fitness of the product for use or consumption after that date. You have to use some of the common sense God endowed you.

No, especially not around your eyes. You should get new makeup aout every 3-4 months, because makeup is like a breeeding ground for bacteria. Especially since your talking about eye makeup, that could do some serious damage to your eyes or cause an infection or something

never use expired make-up!!!! even the new stuff is bad enough for your eyes and skin!then the quality of the products it's not the same. for example, if you use expired mascara it will just look bad. you will have to throw it away 2 month after you open it.

I think it is okay especially if it is kept clean and closed. My sister and mom wears expired make-ups, they don't cause any skin rashes nor changes at all. They even use make-ups that had expired on 2003 or 2004. But it's up to you...

I would be cautious. There's a date for a reason. Old mascara can definitely be bad for your eyes. Old foundation is even worse. Eyeshadow is powdery usually so is probably okay to use.

I would say Yes however there is always a risk that it has not been tested after the expiry date.... therefore the suppliers have no way of knowing the effects. Logically it should be fine but there is no way of knowing. (unless you have already done it)

Not reccommended. But it won't hurt you. You may just break out. I have tons of old make-up that I still use. Some I just can't let go. I do replace some.
