By the sheer economical, political and military power of the U.S. English has become a kind of international language in the 20th century. There is no reason that this has to remain so. Other empires who have conquered the world known to them and spread their language far and wide have overstretched and broken down before (the Athenian Empire in the Mediterranean, the Roman Empire in Europe and around the Mediterranean, the Spanish and Portuguese Empires, even the British Empire).

I agree with Kelleinna (1st person's answer) because I am a native speaker of English and I sometimes have trouble spelling some words, because they have extra letters that are silent and English is pretty inconsistent. I also speak Spanish (my 2nd language) and although it is a bit more difficult for me because it is my second language, I find that overall, it is an easier language, because everything is sounds the way it looks.
Now to answer your question, I believe that since the USA has so much influence on the world, it's language (English) has become the most widely used language (internationally speaking). I believe Spanish and French are tied for second. Although Chinese (Mandarin) is the language with the most speakers because there are so many Chinese people, it is not widely used, I'd say mainly in China.
And I can tell English is not your first language based on the way your question is written, BUT I can understand your question and what you are asking and it is MUCH better than some native speakers of English who can't even write. So Congratulations to you.

One has to learn English so that the person can go freely any where in the world. It is the International language spoken almost everywhere in the world. It acts as an umbrella to safeguard one's interests. A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

I think that English is a very difficult language to learn to write and speak correctly. Many people settle for speaking it poorly and ungrammatically (including many of the English) and it is a good sign that you are critical of your performance, as that way you will continue to work at it.
The reason why English has become so widespread is because of the British Empire, which caused it to be spoken all over the world, including the former British colony, the USA. It is a simple matter of geography and, perhaps politics.

Honestly I don't know. I'm a native speaker of English and I've studied several other languages. My opinion is that any one of the Latin-based languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, etc.) would be WAY easier to learn than English. I think probably the worst thing about English, even worse than the grammatical structure of sentences, is the spelling system. We have 3 different sounds for the letter A that I can think of off the top of my head. How is any foreigner going to learn to read easily?
I think the HARDEST languages in the world to learn are, in order, Chinese, Japanese, German, and English, then it gets easier from there... lol. But that's just my opinion.

because, most of the things our generation is using is in English, for example, the key board you are using right now, the mobiles, most of the famous movies, the things on your remote control, the car numbers, people need to communicate, and with all these things, people are getting familiar with the English language more than anything else, i learned English and french at school together, but i can't really speak french now as there was nothing i can practice on as the English language which i can talk by with almost everyone, and they made a good marketing, for the English language, through books, strong TV programs, advertisements and many other :)

English is the primary world language because of many, many, historical events that unfolded the way they did. Not the least of which was the British Empires imperialistic expansion which over 200 years managed to encompass much of the world.
World War II ending the way it did played a huge role in solidifying the English language as the defacto form of communication for many.

The answer is very simple. Starting with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the British Navy came to dominate the world's oceans and, therefore, to control the lion's share of trade. They established colonies around the world to increase their percentage of the world's trade. After the two World Wars, the American Navy picked up where the British left off and became the dominate sea-force ensuring trade in the world. Then the Americans invented the airplane and this reinforced the power of the U.S. dollar in world affairs and world trade. It has nothing to do with the language and everything to do with the economic history of the world.

It is the most common because of the amount of colonies that Britain had. The grammar is pretty simple, much simplier than Spanish anyway. Though lots of native english speakers get it wrong. The pronunciation is a complete nightmare, especially for people who speak latin based languages as a first language.
You're doing OK though, you made yourself understood which is the main point of the exercise.
