After a long walk our 7y old Jack Russell has developed a sore front leg which he is reluctant to put weight on. Gentle manipulation of the limb gives him no pain or concern but he seems of-colour and very quite. This is the first time he has had any problems and is normally very lively. However, we have had visitors over the last week who have played with him relentlesly throwing a ball up and down the stairs - could this be the problem

I would definitely take him to the vet, even if it's nothing it's best to put your mind at rest. I hate to see my dog in pain or being seemingly depressed, first sign of trouble and she's straight to the docs!

Yes I suggest that you take your dog to the vet. If there seems to be something wrong with your pet, then there is either something wrong or something that might be wrong.

Just recently I took my puppy to the vet for scratching her ears quite a bit. My boyfriend thought I was overreacting since it's normal for dogs to scratch their ears; however I honestly felt that there was something wrong and she definitely scratched hear ears too much. I'm glad that I didn't listen to him and instead took her to the vet because she end up having a yeast infection in hear ears and he ears were swollen up and red inside. The vet put me on medication (ear stuff and antibiotics) and told me that this could mean possible allergies.

So something people may think you are overreacting but it's always good to be sure. It may be that his paw is swollen from all the excitement or perhaps something else.

I would take him to to your vet BECAUSE he is seven years old. He is now geriatric and needs extra special care as he gets older. Also, a sore leg can get much more irritated in a jack russell because they have endless amounts of energy. Also, no over the counter meds!!I All human anit-inflammatories are toxic to dogs and cats.Veterinary prescribed products are so much better for their pain and are safe.Good luck with him!! no more long walks...he is too little anyway:)

your dog has probaly pulled a muscle tack him to an animal chiropractor. give him a tablet of magnesium orotate 400mg everyday it will help with the mucles. Take him to the vet if he s not wieght bearing in 3 or so days. I own 8 Jack Russell been breeding for 6 years. look after him :) I have a ball fanatic Jacks too. Her daughter is learning ;)

As you have tested for any obvious signs of pain and discomfort and assumuming the dog itself isn't continually licking the area (a sign of pain) then its probably a strain. This just needs rest, give your dog a few days off from walks - keep to the garden. I would also give him painkillers, a low dose of Ibuprofen will ease the pain and reduce any swelling. If it shows no improvement after 2-3 days, take him to the vet.

Yeah I would go to a vet, it could be a common form of arthritis found in pets. But of course it could also minor aches and pains due to over usage of the muscles.

Anyway it turns out go to a vet, thats the best option.

Maybe...it couldn't hurt. Its a personal preference which type of doc you choose but, I think a vet for your dog should be sought out... to be on the safe side. We had a German Shepard that had hip dysplagia that caused him a lot of pain when he would jump. This is common in bigger dogs...well Shepard's anyway. Its best you get him checked. Good luck to you and your dog. I wish him well...I really do.

You haven't given me any reason to think that you need to see a vet. Your Jack Russell, however, is a different story. I would take him in to see the vet, as a sprain or even a hairline bone fracture could be the cause of the discomfort.

He may have the aches and pains we are all familiar with through too much exercise. I would give him minimum walking for the next couple of days and try and keep him calm. If he's not better then I think its a trip to the vets.

take him to a vet and then lay down some ground rules for visitors. Your dog needs your protection from people who don't understand dogs and see them only as 'things' to amuse themselves with. You can be darn sure that I would stop any visitor behaving inappropriately with my pets.
