My adopted son who is 11, has a skin issue. Where we live its very cold and packed with snow. Ever since Winter came around my son has skin that feels very rough and dry, feels like it has no moisture in it.

I have gave him a bath every day but that has done nothing. His whole body is dry and rough like this, his arms, legs, thigs, back, just about everywhere.

Its not a different colour skin or anything. I am only 27 year old mother and I have no idea what I have to do with this, please give me some info.

He may have a genetic skin disease. I can't remember the name of it - my friend's 2 year old has it. In the winter time, he develops red bumps and his skin is really dry. The doctors told her that the best way to avoid the rash is to exfoliate often and moisturize a lot.
She purchased a homeade bath bar from Breezy Beach Wear called Oatmeal Sugar Cookie. It has done wonders for her son's skin. She follows up each bath with a lotion. For your 11 year old, make sure he uses a body lotion with lactic acid in it - which gently eats away at dead skin after it has been exfoliated.

Its important not to exfoliate everyday, but about once or twice a week with this condition. The Oatmeal Sugar Cookie bar worked so well because it was made with all natural ingredients like oatmeal, vanilla extract, and brown sugar. Oatmeal is also a natural moisturizer.

Check it out online at: http://www.breezybeachwear.com and click on Beachy Clean.

Good luck!

I have horrible dry skin and eczema. You might want to bathe him every other day in luke warm water (hot water depletes the skin of vital moisture). Use an oatmeal bath and clean with Cetaphil (a very gentle cleanser that can be used without water - just tissue off). Is he itchy? It might be eczema. You can try a hydrocortosone cream. And always use a light moisturizer without any added fragrence like Cetaphil (also has a nice moisturizer) or baby oil.

If you can, take him to a dermatologist. He will diagnose the real cause of the dry skin and further advise you.

Good luck!

You may be helping to dry his skin out after bathing. After his bath wipe his skin off with a damp( not wet) cloth to remove the water but not the moisture. Apply a pure african shea butter ( this can be bought at almost any beauty supply store for about $4)
I have the worst dry skin ever and this was the only thing that helped. It was soothing, kept my skin soft, moist and eventually more toned in color. I saw a difference after 2 days.

Well..i have dry skin as well. Here is what i do. For a soap and body wash....try perfume free. Johnson & Johnson Baby bar soap, Aveeno body wash, Oil of Olay with shea butter, umm...there is an Aveeno body oil...used for bathing and for body after cleansing...has a dark blue band on it. DO NOT get anything that is perfumed heavily...like a Dial, Zest, Irish Spring. That is hell for people with severely dry skin. Try a loofah..that is helpful to remove the excess dry skin cells. Aveeno is the best i think...gives alot of relief...especially the bath oil..is fabulous. Good luck.

Hello,

Go to your nearest health food store and purchase a jar of organic expeller (or cold pressed) coconut oil. This is the absolute best oil for the facial and body skin. It may seem weird at first to use it, but I've been using it throughout the winter season in my area and don't have a problem with dry flaky skin anymore. Also, it makes your skin look younger and plumper.

It's defiantly safe to use on your son as it contains no artificial harsh chemicals and the fatty acids (lauric acid) that is in coconut is very compatible with the skin.

I hope this helps.
