I am adopting a 2 year old shepard husky mix, who is an extremely sweet dog, she just loves having her belly rubbed! I currently have two 1 year-old cats. When tested at the shelter she showed no interest (negative or posative) in cats. Both cats were kittens when I adopted them, so they have had no expirence with any dogs, any advice on intoducing them to the newest member of the family or any advice in general about being a new dog owner?

Give the cats a safe area and bring the dog in on a leash. Let the cats investigate the dog. They will run away when the dog moves, and that is fine, but the leash is there so you can prevent the dog from chasing them. Then walk the house with the leashed dog, you can let him off, but do not let him go to where the cats are hiding. If you do they will feel like he has invaded and not relax enough for any of them to acclimate quickly. Keep the dog with you, do something like sit quietly or watch TV, something where your cats normally approach. When the cats do come up, try to keep everyone calm and let the sniffing begin.
The key is not to let anyone feel threatened or get too upset, to let everyone walk away if they need to. They will eventually get used to each other, but it is very important not to have the cats feel like prey for the first hour or two.

Good on you for taking in an older dog. If the dog shows no interest even when the cats hiss at the dog you will have not much trouble. Cats as you know can be very jealous animals. If you keep treating them all equally they won't fight. Our cat is moody some days she sleep beside our dog other days she tries to chase him, but they get a long fine.
