No-one really knows. There was a program on the T.v about it (sad i did watch it). They say it was because there was a 99 stamped on the original cone. Some people believe it was because an Italian king who had 99 bodyguards who were the best of the best. People said that something was 99 to describe the best of something.

Although Ice Cream men are getting very stingy and now using mini fake flakes that taste of really nasty cheap chocolate :(

modern practise suggests its the addition of the bit of what I presume is cadbury's flake inserted.
However orignally the "99" was a specific make of Ice Cream cornet

the Flake, which of course many years ago upped the price to 99p from the original 50p price of an ordinary ice cream.
Dunno how much they are now, though
and of course you wouldn't want to buy them from an ice cream van cos you would catch salmonella ... have you seen the state of the hygiene (or lack of it) in them?
