Boxing Day is a public holiday celebrated in the United Kingdom and most other Commonwealth countries on December 26, the day after Christmas Day
Some historians say the holiday developed because servants were required to work on Christmas Day, but took the following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would present them with gift boxes.
Church Alms Boxes
Another theory is that the boxes placed in churches where parishioners deposited coins for the poor were opened and the contents distributed on December 26, which is also the Feast of St. Stephen.
As time went by, Boxing Day gift giving expanded to include those who had rendered a service during the previous year. This tradition survives today as people give presents to tradesmen, mail carriers, doormen, porters, and others who have helped them.

Boxing day is the day after christmas day and is celebrated in most commonwealth countrys ie england, canada, australia parts of africa etc. The tradition behind it is that back in the day rich folk would box up food, drink and other stuff and give them to there staff as presents some would also give to the homeless and other people in need etc. Nowadays Boxing day just represents the start of the after christmas sales and is a day most people get off work unless you work in a shop of course. Where you would be expected to work but would get payed double time or someting like that. Also the tv tends to be different lots of films and stuff like that, ironically not usually much boxing shown on boxing day though.

12/26 in the Commonwealth. I believe it started during Victorian times because servants had to work on X-mas day, but then their employers gave them a box of goodies and the day off on the 26th.
