You can race on a bike that costs less that 100 bucks or more than 20,000. Assuming your talking road bikes (most common) a new mid level 105 ish equipped road bike will set you back around 1500 usd. Weight around 18.5 lbs. the price will more or less double with every 2 lbs you take off (as a rough guide). Big bucks paid for hand made carbon fibre frames with special resin treatments.

Bike Nashbar has an aluminum/carbon stays bike with Ultegra and a carbon fork for $999. Now is the time to get a bike. Many unsold stock over Christmas, 2006 models and so on. You can race a bike equiped with shimano 105 for maybe as little as $750. The lower your price gets, the more compromises you make.

It depends on what type of racing you are doing, and what your price range is. I think, for a solid road bike you should spend at least $1000-$1500 for it. If you are just riding recreationally you could spend as little as $600 and have a dependable bike.

Depends what you're looking for. Generally, the lighter the bike, the more expensive it gets. All the major manufacturers have web sites and they all have a dealer locator feature. Check them out (www.trekbikes.com, www.jamisbicycles.com, www.cannondale.com, www.giant-bikes.com and there are many others) Get an idea of what's available and the price ranges, then go to your local bike shop and let them help you decide what's right for you.

How much do you want to spend? Luckily they usually top out under $10,000, and you can get a sweet ride for under $5,000 if you feel like it.

But a top rider makes the bike go fast, not the other way around.
