Some great answers here already - yes, Satanism is now an officially recognised religion, though oddly enough, it appears to have as many divisions as any other religion. The original Church of Satan, founded by Anton LaVey, does print a Satanic Bible, but as frater_lazarus said very well, the central idea in this church is not to believe in or worship the "literal" devil but to acknowledge what the character can represent in humanity - power, self-determination and full realisation of the animal, intellectual and magical self. One is not bound to do "evil" by following this path. Rather you take full responsibility for your life - pleasure and pain are equally there for the giving or taking - you choose. You don't "sin" or "obey", you choose what your day will include, what your life will include.

On the other hand, there are some people who do believe in the literal Devil and pray to him, intending to bring about his "victory" in the "great war".

Most real Satanists think they're a bit sad.

wow!!! some of your answers are yet another example of people's ingnorance. making up things and judging areas they have never taken the time to learn about.

satanists DO NOT worship the devil. they worship self. the word satan derives from a latan word meaning adversary. i dont know tons about it as i am a wiccan not a satanist. but i do know there is a big difference between them and devil worshippers. if you truely want the knowledge, i would start with the more detailed responses that say the same as i have. then i would pick up some work by anton levay (the founder) and check that out.

knowledge is key people.

blessed be

well you should know that a lot of people who call themselves satanists actually know nothing about the religion and are only going by the false information the media tells people. most are actually devil worshippers. Satanists are not the goth kids who paint their faces and wear all black. they do not have orgies as a ritual or sacrafice animals or small children as you often see in movies.

Satanism is a religion founded by anton lavey that goes against the christian church and their hypocrosy and instead goes along with human nature. they do not worship or even believe in satan or god and it does not go into very much detail of after life in the satanic bible. most satanists have a live one minute at a time type of attitude one of their main principles being indulgence instead of abstinance and do not harm unless you are threatened or attacked and always to warn and give one second chance. in satanism you are your own god and should treat yourself accordingly. but no one is born any better or worse than anyone else. give everyone a chance and treat them not as you want them to treat you but as they do treat you

the official website is www.churchofsatan.com and you can buy the bible at your local barnes and noble store (the satanic bible by anton lavey) if you want to know more and the truth i would also reccomend satan speaks by lavey it is a lot easier to read than the bible and get to the basic points rather quickly.

Hi, there.

Yes, there are Satanists out there. I am one of them.

I believe that the concept of the Devil represents an affirmation of life and independence. When you examine YHVH and find a god who changes a covenant from a simple code of 10 basic ethical commandments to 613 laws dealing with every aspect of life, who ravages your civilization using local thugs (read King Nebuchadnezzar) when you go against his will with all the logic of an abusive spouse (you made me give you that black eye) - well, let's just say that you become convinced that the Judeo-Christian-Islamic god is not exactly the friend of humanity.

I'm not bound to go out and commit "evil" by Jehovah's definition. Instead, I would say that I have left behind Biblical/Qur'anic morality in favor of my own convictions. Rather than worrying about violating divine command, I examine the world around me and engage it to find solutions. In this, I am inspired by my Friend and Muse, that principle who throws down the gauntlet and dares existence to adapt, survive, and grow - who spits in the eye of anyone who commands ignorance and punishes inquiry - who heals the division of sacred and profane without hypocrisy.

If you'd like to discuss it further, please feel free to contact me.

Hail Satan,

Lazarus

The Church of Satan was founded by Anton LaVey. It IS recognized as a legitimate religion, therefore members are entitled to the same status as any other religion.

Their intentions are bad, so they convince themselves that the Devil wants them to do bad things. Whereas in reality, the Devil is God's creation, and his job is to give every living creature the choice to do bad things or overcome this possibility.

But what if Satan is only the bad guy because he lost. History is written by the victor, so he might really be the good guy.

Yes it is Satan worship. Satan is their God and who they serve. They can call it religion and get all the tax benefit that any religion gets. If you want to talk relationship with Jesus that is different. if you have a relationship with Jesus that is as good as it gets.
