I use a consciuos contact method. I think about the prayers I have had. I try to be some ones living prayer (car broke down on the side of the road, help elderly person with their groceries...that sort of thing)
I also pray for alignment with the divine order (god's will)
and the power to carry out his will.

It depends on the situation. While I was still working I'd have a conversation for the Lord as I drove into work. It helped to get my priorities in line and prepared me for the day. When I get a prayer request now while at the computer I stop doing what I'm doing and just talk to the Lord silently. I use meditation for relaxation not for praying. Reciting the same prayer over and over is not praying to me. A prayer for me has to come from the heart it has to include praise of the Lord, appreciation for all the wonders and gifts you have received from Him. Not every prayer has to be a prayer asking for something for you or someone else, it can be a prayer of thanksgiving. When you're praying to request something then you need to be clear on what it is you are asking the Lord to do. Remember it says you only have to ask and it will be given.

There is only one prayer that is effective and that is the prayer of a righteous person. There are none righteous, no not one. But the bible says that if we believe in the only begotten son of God that we are justified. When God justifies us he makes us the righteousness of God in Christ.
John the baptist came before the Lord as a voice in the wilderness "Prepare ye the way of the Lord." He was calling people to repentance, to turn from sin unto the Living God. Cast up the stones from out of the way.
When we have seen our sin we cry out to God in contrition. That is the first effectual prayer of a righteous person.

When I pray for a pay-check and then work like hell, I always get one.
When I pray for respect and love and then treat people with kindness and consideration, I find my prayers were answered.
Finally, when I stop praying, and continue doing those other things, I realize that praying was never necessary in the first place.

I begin by saying something individually meaningful and relevant for that day. I repeat it, over and over and over. I let it work on my heart and my mind. I say it louder and louder - eventually, I begin screaming it and words begin pouring out.
I guess it's a little similar to automatic writing, in that I'm not formulating complete (or necessarily coherent) thoughts, but I do feel a great rush of release in the process and a sense of peace afterward.
