I used to be very thin but I have had 3 kids and I am going through a lot of divorce related problems right now. I cant eliminate the stress and cant afford therapy :) so how do I over come this bad habit? I am 60 pounds overweight and dont have a lot of energy to exercise.

Well..you know what is causing you to overeat...the stressors...
Now that you know, you need some motivation to destress. It helps to have some accountability...like a friend who can help to keep you accountable for taking a walk, stretching, eating in moderation...etc.

Make some positive goals and try to stick to them. You have your children to think of....when you are healthy and happier...they can sense that too.

go buy some healthy snacks, so when you crave for food when you're stressed, then you wont be taking so many calories. or you can just cut up pieces of celery, carrots, cucumber.
stay away from buying cookies and sweets and fast food.
try to walk or move as much as you can. even fidgeting can lose some calories.
try to sleep more to loosen the stress. and talk with friends or family or someone about your problems. if you dont have the time to do that, do it when you're shopping.
buy something expensive and pretty and a size smaller. and put it out in front of your closet. so everyday you will see the outfit and feel motivated to lose weight.

One word: gum.

Chewing is relaxing, which is why many people overeat. Find a good gum of some sort and keep several packs around the house. Next time you're tempted to go for the Blue Bell, pop a Dentyne in your mouth instead. You'll be consuming very few calories (usually not any) and you can get your chewing in.

You could try planning meals the day before. That will keep you from eating impulsively (assuming you can follow your plan). Don't try and plan too much less than you normally eat until you get used to it though or it will be too hard to continue.

I also would suggest some kind of exercise. If you have a choice to walk or drive, walk instead.
