My cat showed up on my doorstep 2 years ago and was very sick. I took him in and to the vet, where the vet said he had an upper respiratory infection. He got well but ever since he gets sick all the time...sneezing mostly. He is an indoor cat and is never outside, so I don't understand why he keeps getting sick. Every time I take him back to the vet, he just sends me home with an antibiotic that only sometimes works. Is it possible that he has allergies or something? I am spending so much money and he just keeps getting sick again...

Hi there...cats who have ongoing sneezing, watery eyes, cold-like symptoms could be a result of the (FVR) Feline rhinotracheitis virus or better known as Feline Herpes Virus (FHV) and another feline disease such as Feline Leukemia (FeLV). Allergies are another possibility, however it's important to determine if FHV or FeLV is involved since it requires specialized treatment and protection from other cats since this is contagious. In this instance if you live in area where other veterinary hospitals are available consider an alternative opinion.

Please consider reading the following websites about FHV to see if your cat fits this pattern:

Once a cat gets sick, it's there for life, They have a very hard time bringing up immunities, and especially in the lungs, they can't cope with it... Hey may also have allergies yes, and if he does that will contribute to the problems more and more. A vet should do more testing for you, bring you to the rout of the problem, and give you ideas for supplements that would better help your cat on a daily basis as to make the sickness less and less frequent, until eventually it may not happen anymore until he is in his last years. Try getting a new vet, this one doesn't seem to be the smartest, he should have done some pretty extensive testing by now, especially if you've brought the cat into him more than 4 times for the same thing... Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I would suspect it is allergies to something inside, possibly carpet or dust in the carpet. I am a firm believer in fresh air for all animals, even cats. There are a lot of irritating fumes, allergens inside a house. could be a cleaning product, carpet fresheners, Fabreeze, cigs?. Cats have a tricky upper respiratory system. Changed the filters regular?

I would get a second opinion at least! And some fresh air for the cat. They can go out on a leash with patience and practice.

I would suggest you look for a homeopathic veterinarian. The bad news is they are hard to find and there may not be one in your area. The good news is that they do not have to "see" your cat to treat him successfully.

Homeopathic veterinarians are often the "vets of last resort" who are successful in helping animals for whom regular vets have not answers or solutions to their health problems.

My cat with bladder cancer is being treated by a homeopathic vet in MA (I am in CA). So the vet has never "seen" Mincho. I do not know (nor does the vet) if the treatment will be successful and regular vets have no answers for cats with this type of cancer.

You can go to www.homeovet.net to Dr. Jeff Levy's site and read about the homeopathic approach. All directions for contacting Dr. Levy are at the site or you can see if there is a homeopathic vet in your area by doing a search at www.homeopatic.org and click on "Find a homeopath". That site also gives information on what homeopathy is and how a homeopathic vet will work with you and your cat. At www.littlebigcat.com Dr. Jean Hovfe has an article titled "Introduction to Homeopathy" which will give you more information on that approach to animal health.

I definitely think this is something you should look into as you are getting nowhere with regular vets at this point.

Sounds like your cat has feline leukemia or a "flu" like cat virus that will plague him all his life. You should talk to your vet about this. Perhaps extended courses of antibiotics will help. I have a kitten that I rescued from her mother before her eyes were open because her mother was sick. This kitten has all the symptoms of feline leukemia and has bouts with upper respiratory infections and diahrrea. She is 5 months old, has been on vitamins all her life and is currently on amoxicillin for the 8th time since her rescue and will probably be on an antibiotic for the rest of her life. My kitten is very special to me as I'm sure your cat is to you. Good luck with him and talk to your vet!!!!!

I have 4 cats and I am going through the same thing with one of them. I feel so bad for her because her nose is constantly running and if I leave for even a few hours I can come home and her nose with be full of dried mucus. So then I have to get the mucus out then take Q-tips and try and get the rest out. (sometimes I feel like I should by stocks in Q-tips because we go through sooo many of them) It is an on going thig battle and my vet said and has done the same thing with the antibiotics but they never work. I feel so bad for my kitty and I am trying everything under the sun to find out why?? I do put Rosemary Verbenone hydrosol in their water once and a while, or but a drop a of eucalyptus on her chest. I have changed her food (which I highly recommend try a "raw" diet or a kibble that has no grains in it) and trying to weed out certain items. My next step is to go and get her a body scan that will tell me what she is allergic to. It a little costly but I hate seeing her when she can breath out of her nose because it is plugged up. She is such a cuddle cat and seems happy and is very playful. Try taking him into the bathroom when you have a shower and shut the door so he gets steamed because if it is an infection then the steam with help loosen the mucus for it to come out. Hope this helps!!

Do you smoke? I know some cats, get respiratory problems from that. The cat is probably allergic to something in the house.
Always keep the litter box extra clean too. Lots of water and I hope she is feeling better soon.

Maybe he is allergic, or maybe he has a low imunesystem.
That vet isn't really trying to find the cause. I don't understand why he's not trying to help you and your cat better.
I have a cat too. And i really hope you'll be able to find out what wrong so that you can fix it.
Good luck...

I have two cats that sneeze all the time and run fever for no good reason. Had them tested for Feline Lukemia and that was negative. At the vets suggestion we tested them for FIP (feline infectious peritnious) and low and behold they both have it. Talk to your vet about that.
