If you're asking which to install on a regular-use machine, I'd say go with WinXP. Windows 98 is a dinosaur on the computer timeline and Windows no longer supports it. So that means that if there are new security holes for it, Microsoft no longer creates patches for it. In fact, Microsoft either already has or is close to dropping support for Windows2000 as well. If you go with XP, you'll get more patches easier. Also, XP has more drivers for printers, scanners and other such items than Win98 does so if you're reinstalling a printer, etc you most likely won't need to find the CD with the installation software.

My computer is a dual boot machine that runs both 98 and 2000. I may later on convert to XP, but currently 2000 is my primary system.

I like its stability better than 98, but I keep 98 because I have some applications that won't run in the newer operating systems.

Seems like windows xp is taking over for windows 98. Both of them have their own pros and cons.

after using both systems since release, I have grown to like XP, as it updates by itself and is relitively self maintained. (That can be good and bad I guess)

I have and will always have problems with win 98. It's not very stable at all at times.

If you Are buying a Windows system wait for windows vista to be released as it would be a waste to pay 300 for a new windows when a new one is being released soon. but if i had to pick windows xp would be my choice more functions.
