I have heard the effects are stunning. Which is worst the heat or the blast wave or shrapnel?

I can tell you all about it. First, you see the flash then the sound comes. Loudest thing you'll ever hear it seems like. Then the shock of what just happened hits you, you want to react but you've got a million things going through your head. You pull it together figure out if you're upside down or rightside up, if you're hit or not, if your buddies are hit or not, all the while if you're under small arms fire you are returning fire if you are able. As if that wasn't bad enough, you're praying their isn't a secondary around you and trying to return fire and keep you buddy alive long enough to call in a medivac. Then you realize your hit too. You think of your wife and how you promised her you'd make it home safe. Anyways, memories got away from me- armor helps some it can mean the difference between life and death. But on the flip side the more armor we put on the bigger the IED's get. You've seen the news with the wrecked HMMVV's from a placed IED think about what a VBIED can do. (Vehicle-Borne-IED)

Ironically, body armor increases the effect of a blast wave by spreading out the impact of the wave on a person's body, which causes pulmonary (lung) injuries that can be fatal. I'm not sure how one would rate which is the worst of heat, blast wave or shrapnel. All can be fatal depending on your proximity to the explosion, where the shrapnel or heat hits you, and what kind of protection you have. And you are correct, the effects are stunning. Check out CNN's special report on battlefield medicine if you truly want to see the effects of IEDs. I personally couldn't bear to watch the whole thing.

sharpnel. damn ieds are hell. of course armor makes it less painfull, but it still hurts, if you're still alive to feel pain. unless you're in a tank... then you just pray you don't hit a tank mine. or you could be an unlucky person and roll over a tank mine w/ a hum-v. o.O now that would hurt. but yah. ieds are bad. could easily loose a limb or your life.
