I have one 3 month old female thai dog (medium size mongrel). Just got a pitbull cross, mother was also a cross so I guess that makes him a quarter pitbull. I am worried about the danger side of a pitbull especially around children, is this made worse by it being a cross or better? Also will my other dog be overly jealous?

He can be a wonderful family member, if you don't just leave him to train himself, but devote time and effort into keeping him well socialized, and well mannered, right from the start..They are just not the dog that can be put in a yard and left to train themselves..but must be handled gently and firmly..Never hit or abused, but also not allowed to become spoiled and dominant..
If you are able to take the time to teach him, he will reward you with unconditional loyalty.

The only reasons pitbulls are dangerous for children are because they are powerful and high-energy, which means they can knock over small children easily when playing, and they are protective of their pack and territory, which means that neighbor children might be threatened under poor circumstances.

The answer to both of these issues to simply to make sure a pitbull gets plenty of exercise to minimize the build up of frustrated energy, AND that you always supervise the dog and children when they're together. But that's true with any breed of dog.

The fact that the dog is a cross won't let you predict much. Crosses can exhibit any combination of traits from the parents. You should get a feel for your individual dog's personality as you get to know him.

Your other dog won't be jealous as long as you continue treating that original dog the same as it was treated before the arrival of the new dog. Your original dog is so young that I don't think it will be an issue at all.

I recommend that you be sure that both dogs get plenty of exercise -- a tired dog is a good dog -- and that you keep both of them trained to respect and obey you and the children.

Pitbulls are VERY missunderstood, they are WONDERFUL dogs. my beautiful pit is just loving to children even her first day meeting a young child. They are sooooooooo loveable. She sleeps and cuddles right with us. They are very LOVING! They enjoy people and love children!

"The breed's natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.
The American Pit Bull Terrier makes an excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. "

"Is this breed good with children in general?
This breed tends to love all people, especially children. The only caution I would add is that, because they are very exuberant and energetic dogs, they can sometimes overwhelm very young children and accidentally bump them or knock them over, particularly when they are pups (under 2 years old)."

I also have a pit/lab cross. I find she is the best dog I ever had. She loves my cats and protects them. She is an excellent guard dog and protects us all. It's not the dog that has the problem, it's the people that train them. Any pitbull can be a great dog, but it takes a bad owner to make it a bad one.

the danger side of a pit is the same as with any dog. if they are not handeled by someone who knows what they are doing and how to train properly any dog will be dangerous. as for your other dog it depends on how you've trained him. if he's well socialized and mannered, then you shouldn't have many problems. there are issues any time you introduce another dog to the household. a dog can bite anytime they have teeth and their breed does not dictate aggression. honestly you should have researched all of this BEFORE you got another dog. but too little too late heh? take your new pup to a training class, involve your kids in the training to help the new dog understand you are it's pack leaders. training will help you bond better with the dog and give the dog an understanding of what is expected of it. good luck.

Don't worry about the pittbull around children!! I have at least a half pitt, and he's great around my 2 yo, who steps on him yells at him, hits, kicks him, throws stuff at him, hugs him to tight, pulls his tail, and pretty much abuses him, without hurting him!

Pitbulls ARE NOT mean by nature, agressive yes, but mean, NO!! THEY ARE NOT A VICIOUS BREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were originally bred to take out large game in hunting, bears wild boar, mountain cats, anything that a human couldn't survive an attack from. It doesn't matter if the dog is purebred pitt, or half, or whatever. It's not he breed, it's the owner! If you treat your pitt with love and respect, they will die trying to protect you!

The link below is to a page that tells you everything you need to know about a pitt bull, or a mixed pitt for that matter. It had great info about the pitt, and I bed everyone who reads my answer to look at this page! Maybe we can stop this stero-type on pitts, because of the retarded and immoral owners the pittbulls have!! If you havent' been around, or owned a pittbull, don't you dare sit there and say they are vicious, or "the only good pitt is a dead pitt"!!!!! They are one of the most patient breeds, more patient then a retreiver! They were also bred to protect humans, not hurt them!!

Morons use them in dog fights because their jaw muscles start at the top of their head, instead of at the jaw, like other breeds.

The second link is an excellent site on pit info!!!!!! Everyone PLEASE READ IT!!!!!

Not all pits are vicious! I honestly wouldn't worry if hes only a little pit! The cross shoudl make him less likely to act out his aggression, just keep an extra close watch on him and be ready to take action if he does act out. Pits have a bad rep. Part of the problem is the people who keep them and abuse them. I've know plenty of genuinely nice pits and pit crosses...the scary thing about pits is once they get ahold, they don't let go! They were bred like that...they're supposed to take down a full size bull cow!!! Because of that, here in CO you are required by law to carry with your pit at all times a "jaw pipe", literally a pipe so that you can pry his mouth open if something does happen....Don't freak out. Take him to a good trainer and treat him like any other dog! Especially if hes a cross....

Try this site it has lots of good information. I was reading articles there today on bringing a new pet into the household.
http://www.ddfl.org/tips.htm

A good group is on Yahoo. It's called ag beh.
On the Yahoo homepage go the left side of the page and go to groups and put in ag beh. You have to request to join. They have lots of good advice and links and articles there.

There was a posting on a Thai dog there, so it made me think of that too.

Most pitbulls adore children. They were bred to be aggressive to other dogs, not humans. If you socialize your puppy to children, he should be fine.

It might be too late to ask the questions. Why didn't you ask before you got the second dog?
