Has anyone who does not believe there is a god find this bothersome? It happened to me and a friend on the train the other day, where the woman said 'god works in wonderous way'. Neither one of us believe in god and follow our own faith. But it was really weird that some stranger would just assume. Its even seen on Yahoo answeres where most people answer with "because god..."

Well, to certain extent, the use of the word God can be poetic. Sometimes I say "God works in mysterious ways" but mostly in jest.

But you're right. And the reason atheists have a reputation for rudeness is that only the more ... assertive(?) ... ones interrupt someone who uses the word God.

As for why? I suppose it's because it's cultural.

It is true that the majority of faiths - and especially those that have the most followers - do have a god. Most people do believe in a god.

Consider whether the lady was really assuming your belief in God or not - was she saying it because she believes or because she thought that you do?

Is it really an impolite assumption to speak from your personal beliefs?

There is a saying about assumption but I would not repeat the entire text to that ..
I am of spiritual not religious Judgement of others is the worst of all. I have always felt that ones who judges are the ones who are most afraid , easy to point or throw a stone to someone who has a different point of view of things.
Little does anyone realize no matter what faith we believe in, we all have the same goal and end up in the same place.
For myself I do not pass judgement on anyone no matter what path they lead as long as you lead a good life, you will end up in the place everyone else ends up in.
This may upset a few but independent thought and freedom to express is our right in life no matter who we are ,, we have that right to follow whatever we choose to do.
I have many people around me of different cultures. And all have some kind of connection to same belief they just choose a different path to get there.
Even Atheist have some belief in life it may not be of spiritual nor religious but they do belief in LIFE and living and I respect their way of life as well.

well this could be a long story that never ends.*smiling*

The main reason that people think that everyone believes in God is because the ones who don't are too cowardly to admit it. They get asked for their religion while on a job interview and all of a sudden they discover they are Baptists.

Are you in the USA? 85% of people believe in the Christian god and 5% more are theistic in other ways. People just make assumptions because so many will statistically be Christian.

Yeah... it's bothersome. It's even more bothersome when they react negatively when they find out I'm not Christian or theistic in any sense.

I'll assume you live in America or Britain. Most English speaking countries have Christianity as their head religion. About 3/4 of Americans are Christians, therefore mostly anyone that you talk to here believes that God is our creator and that Jesus died on the cross to save us from Hell.

(I personally, am one of them, but I respect your religion and will not force mine upon you. I hate people like that.)

Mabey because the majority does. Or maybe they cannot think beyond themseIves. I still think its rude though. I'm sorry this person was so inconsiderate of you and your friend. At least you two know better than to act in the same way. Maybe others can learn through your actions on how not to judge people.

I havent the slightest idea o.O

But this has happened to me many times.
Especially when I eat with someone and they insist on saying grace before.

I believe it may be a result of many extreme religious peoples close-mindedness and belief that their religion is the only right and true one and that everyone should believe it.
