This seems like a ridiculous question (and you should blame your text book or wherever you got it from ). I suspect it came from a textbook and the only "right" answer will be out of that same book.

The question is ridiculous because all resources are unique and what makes them unique is the fact that they are what they are. Why is air a unique resource? Because it is air, and nothing else is air except air, so it is unique. Why is water a unique resource? Because it is water and nothing else besides water, is water. Why is gold a unique resource.....etc, etc

What they are probably trying to ask is, what aspects of water allow for unique applications and uses, or make it an important reource, or something to that effect.

It's not a unique resource. Nothing that covers 2/3s of the globe and is in the top 10 most common compounds on earth should be called unique.

I guess maybe the person is trying to say that another compound cannot be substituded for water, like oil and gas can be substituted for each other, but I wouldn't use the word unique for one of the most common compounds on the planet. And if you cant get it from rain, maybe you can get it from the river, etc.. Sorry, I see nothing UNIQUE about water really.

Because it is the universal solvent. It helps to transport cellular materials, it is used as part of a mean for lubrication such as in joints, organs, eyes. Also, it creates an enviromental homeostasis.
