If someone came into your yard with the intent of harming you or a relative and you were not able to defend yourself with anything but a hard stick, would you use a stick on the intruders limbs, or make a run for the house as quickly as possible with your relative and lock the door then call the cops(time consuming)? This is assuming that you do not have a permit to have and use firearm. This is also in view of any legal ramifications.

Its always a good idea to run to safety when possible. That way you know you will live to see tomorrow and no worries of a law suit or being charged for assault or man slaughter.

Don't believe what you see in the movies! It don't work that way!

Legally, you have to run in your house and call the cops. I believe that is COMPLETE BS. You can make a stand in your house, but in all other cases you have to flee if you are able.

What if he goes on and hurts someone else when you could have stopped him?

In that situation I would assess the suspect, determine if he had anything immediately dangerous (a gun) and tell him to leave. If he continued towards me or my family I would pick up that hard stick and proceed to break his arms and legs, then call the cops.

This way, he doesn't pose anymore danger to anyone.

Too bad that the heroes that stop violent criminals and burglars are treated as criminals themselves.

P.S. To the guy down there talking about traps. Booby-trapping EVEN YOUR OWN HOUSE is ILLEGAL. In the USA the life and well being of the criminal ways heavier than your safety and the security of your property. Even if a intruder trips over something while in your home, you can be held liable. I'm not shitting you people, cases have been argued and won for the INTRUDER!

This really depends on the area. In many states, it is considered best to avod convlict, and if possible, you should attempt to lock yourself in (and sometimes run away if they do get in)

However, in most states, if you have locked yourself in, and they get in anyway, they have signalled violent intent (by breaking their way inside) and if there is nowhere left to run, you can feel free to use your stick all you want. Well, until the bad guy is unconscious or can otherwise be restrained.

Do you expect yourself to be in such a situation?

If you can't lay hands on a gun (and since most bad people can) it might be wise to go about making your home into some sort of fortress.

A bit of chain link or picket fence at the propertyline should slow them down just enough to get inside. If you want, you could make a screened in porch (out of metal security screening) or stick a security screen door on in front of your own. Make sure you've got a good sturdy deadbolt, with a sold metal throw, and make sure the strikeplate is attached with four extra long screws.

Additional locks are also possible, but generally, if you've got two or more, the real psychos will try for the windows next. Dobule pane is pretty good. Security films are also good if you can't afford the tough glass, but it's hard to apply. Window bars aren't always so great. If you can plant some thorny nasties in front of them that works about as well.

You'll want a nice fence too. Wood seems to be best. Plant some thorny nasties along the inside of it too, especially by corners, and get one of those trellis arches to go over the gate.
A few flood lights outside might be good too, if the neighbors care what's going on in your area.

Now go on inside. You got yourself a pretty large back bedroom where you can hide out in? Replace the door with an exterior door and some more good locks like on the front door. If the freak can get in there before the police arrive, your tax money is being wasted... and if the freak gets in there after all this, you have every right to beat him down with your big stick.

All of you are not considering one important thing - it is not A PLACE we are talking about, it is the RESIDENCE of the enquirer.

Thus, what you, the enquirer, can do is:
1. Install security systems in your house (at least lamps switched on from inside the house or anywhere in the yard, automatic video-cameras an all)
2. Install alarm systems in your house with switch-buttons evrywhere and as loud as to wake-up evrybody in the neighbourhood.
3. Prepare secure hiding places in your house and the yard, live a phone-set there if necessary.
4. Well, prepare all those funny things like traps and pits (with poisons or tranquilizers), falling logs, sticky oils (for evidences) and all.

Remember, intruders fear whitnesses and leaving evidences.

And Have a good New Year party!

Seriously.

depends on the state you are in.

However most states don't require you to retreat in your own home.

With self-defence there is a requirement that you "retreat" run, if you possibly can.

So if hulk hogan is standing in your front yard threatening you then your size does matter. If you are bob sapp for example, you are not justified in hitting him with a stick, if you are pee-wee herman however you might be justified in pulling out a shotgun and firing away.

Chances are if you run for the house and they are really intent on harming you you they will make it there too. best idea is to have the relative go inside and call the cops while you stall. if he gets violent you can then respond and defend yourself.

Timing is everything. If you are able and have time, disable the attacker with whatever is at your disposal, a big stick or a shovel. If and when the attacker is down, call police and an ambulance. If you fear someone is planning such an assault, best to make family and police aware now. Whether or not it is "legal", keep a tiny canister of dog repellent spray handy, out of reach of children.

Laws vary stste to state. I would use any means available to protect my self & my family. Not knowing your skill level in Martial Arts, I can't tell you which course of action would be best for you. I would make my stand where I was, but then I'm a 3rd degree black belt.

I would try to get to everyone to the house. Contact the authorities and hold my ground inside the house.
It is always best to avoid physical conflict when possible. Why risk injury or death when there are other alternatives? It is not logical.
