if its needed for sex, then no it isnt safe and its rather gross., have you ever touched vaseline and then tried to wash it off your hands? its like when you touch butter its hard to get off. Think about what it will be like on your private areas. Also, even if you trust the person you are with, you should always use a condom which in most cases come pre lubricated. Don't use oil based lubes, they break down the condoms causing them to rip or break. Astroglyde is a decent lube, KY Warming, regular KY, anything water based is great, and you wont get it gunked up all over yourself. If need be, use spit. id reccomend spit over vaseline or baby oil anyday.

Yeah, and yuck!!!! I can think of much better forms. KY has a great product, check with your GYN. They can tell you that kind of stuff over the phone. Leave it to a bunch of men to try and answer this question. It's gross and leaves you really messy!!!!! I tried it once and that was it!!!!!! Make the man work for it, if he's good and you're turned on then you shouldn't need it!!!! But you know how most men are, wham bam thank you mam and then they leave you hangin. A true and good lover will make sure your hot and ready thus not needing yucky lubricants!!!! That's what forplay is for!!!!!

Define "safe".
Generally, no. Primarily because petroleum products tend to degrade condoms, leading to more contraceptive failures.
To answer your other question, yes, I have tried it in cases where the above did not apply. I still don't find it to be particularly useful. It's far better to use the common water-based lubricant K-Y, which is available in any drugstore.

Nope. It's oil based, so it absoltuely cannot be used with latex barriers, such as condoms and diaphragms.
Additionally many health experts believe that oil based lubricants are more likely to cause yeast infections or provide a breeding-ground for bacteria, because they do not break down and wash away as easily.

For sex, if you use a condom it is very very bad. It dissolves latex. There are better lubricants out there. Vaseline is very thick and feels unnatural.

If used between people who don't have disease or other sexual partners, then yes.
Otherwise it is not advised, since a lubricant of any kind is not going to prevent spread of STD's.

You can't use it with condoms because it will eat holes in the condom. It can damage some "toys" too.
You might do better with one of the water-based lubes, KY or Astroglide, or if those don't do it for you, you can buy silicone-based lubes, either online or at the adult video store.

It's messy. Just do it with someone that can turn you on and get your natural lubricants flowing.
