I'm the only black person in a group of friends. Sometimes I can't help but feel like I stick out no matter where we go and I become moody and depressed, and other times I feel like they don't want me around or that I'm useless to them. I don't really understand why I feel like this sometimes but it happens alot. It's not at all that I won't hang out with people of my color, it's just that I've been friends with these girls for a really long time. One of them for almost five years! Should I just cut all ties with them, and make new friends? Or give up altogether? Or should I just tell them how I feel?

Hi,I would suggest not to tell them, its very simple if you think you are black then everybody else would do the same, but if you ignore it everyone else would ignore it, jst try,it sure works,tc.

Do you feel like you stick out only in public because people seem to notice that you are the only minority in the group? If other people have made you feel that way before you are more likely to feel like an outsider as a result. You can't help but feel uncomfortable by this so I won't try to convince you otherwise. I would not relinguish your friendship with your long time friends. Afterall, it seems that you guys have some fond memories and good time or why else are you still hanging around? You can make friends with those for whom you feel more comfortable in public with and hang out with your old friends more in a private setting. Perhaps you are also sensing a need to relate to your own culture and want to bond with others who u have a common heritage with. There's nothing wrong with that. There's also nothing wrong with having a wide variety of friends rather than just sticking to one particular group. The only problem is managing your time and identity with each group in hopes that each of them will understand. If they are true friends, they will.

No don't cut ties. Get together with the one you feel closet too and tell her your thoughts. It is normal to feel a little different when you are a little different but if these are you friends and you are only building up your own insecurities, you run the risk of ruining some very long standing friendships that are obviously important to you. I pray you find a way to speak to them but do it one at a time and then as a group.

Good luck I hope you find a solution but I don't think it is giving up your long time good friends. Take a deep breath and do connect with them and let them know your feelings. Hugs !

Definately tell them how you feel. If you're still feeling like an outcast, like they don't want you around, or depressed you might try to spend time with other friends or new friends. See how you feel then. I know how it feels to be one of one or two African American girls in a group of friends. The other black girls didn't like me very much and there wasn't much I could do about it. Race shouldn't matter in friendship. If matters to your friends then you tell them to change or let them go. It's not good for you to be feeling this way about your friendships (not that it's your fault). Good luck with your problems, I'll pray for you.

You'd let your skin color determine your friends???
