Thanks paul.jenk, even after the bike was stolen I called direct line twice, as a test and was told the bike was covered, infact i recorded the 2nd call myself, sent it to the ombudsman but have been told it does not prove I was told this when I first rang them when the bike was bought

Direct Line say all calls are logged, but this is only when your policy is opened up,I was not asked any policy details...when i did check the policy wording, after the bike was stolen, it does say motor vehicles are not covered, the oxford dictionary defies motor vehicle as a road vehicle with an internal combustion engine, the bike my son had was not a road vehicle,it can`t be insured as a road vehicle is with tax,mot etc..
How are these bikes supposed to be insured?..it`s just so annoying i was told it was covered before it was stolen.

Even if you were told it was covered, if the subsequent policy sent to you didn't say that, you aren't covered. Check the written policy. There will be a 'get out' clause somewhere saying that what was communicated to you by the staff does not form part of the contract, and only the written contract has effect.

If you know the date of the call, they may have recorded it and in that case, if the person did say that the biuke was covered and they can find the tape, then you might shame them into making an ex gratia payment.

Otherwise you are screwed.

I cannot answer the first part of your question, but can the question you asked at the end about covering the bike. You need a special lines policy...a policy that could cover a motorcycle, scooter, or ATV. Many companies who offer those type policies will insure the vehicle whether it is onroad or offroad use.

Doubt if buggery's covered. However, read the fine print of your policy very carefully, it's that which defines the contract between you and them, no matter who claims what was said. In this case, the printed word overcomes the spoken.

We used them for house/contents insurance until we tried to make a claim, we had garden equipment and tools stolen, and found out what a bloody waste of money they are. You may as well not bother insuring and bare the costs yourselves.
