my pomeranian barks when he hears weird noises.. especially when he can't see me, he would bark much more.. that way i would on the radio when I am not home so outside noises would not be heard.
As for your case, can you determine what makes your dog yelp all the time? In other cases, it would be good if he had some disipline and make him/her realize that what he is doing is not right. You can always train your dog in many non-abusive ways..
Here are some links on some training techniques.

I even read somewhere before, dogs bark when they are bored. So when you realize your dog is starting to bark if he is chained up or running around, a good way is just stand infront of him, and when he gets bored of you just standing there and not playing with him/her, he may bark again. When he does you should spray his/her face with some water. Not sure wether this works though. I have never tried.

Your dog is a Pomeranian... or its not. There is really no such thing as a 'miniature.' The standard for the breed is small... 2 to 5 lbs. Anything bigger is the result of poor breeding.
My Pom is 14 lbs!!! But I love her just the same.

5 months is a great time for you to enroll him in a training class. call around and find one that meets your temperment and desires for the dog. training your dog will strenghten you bond together and teach him that you are his pack leader and listen to you when you tell him no to stop yapping. good luck.

No offense, but you got a yappy breed! I suppose you could use a muzzle, but it seems kind of cruel to me. I've heard of people using it on beagles to, but beagles are supposed to bark!!! Its what they do...I would go for the collar that zaps them ( with your vets OK). My friend who is a vet uses it with her dog. I know that sounds kind if hypocritical, but then at least you wouldn't be physically restraining him by clamping his mouth shut...he'd learn that barking hurts...after he gets the message then you can stop using it.
And obviously I don't mean turning it on FULL power...its no worse than giving him a smack with the newspaper, except YOU won't be doing it, so in his little mind he will be able to asociate Barking with OUCH THAT HURT!

Get a muzzle. I did it to my chow when he was little. He's older now, and he doesn't bark any more. Well, except when the doorbell rings. Even the doorbell on the TV.
