Well may be you are right because most of the American places named after the places outside America.
Well Bombay, NY is a small port and Bombay, India is now Mumbai and is a metropolitan city.
The city has a lot of suburbs like Navi Mumbai, Thane, The main suburban region and the places like Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, and Vasai, Kalyan.

Yes it was. Named after Bombay India as a gift for Michael Hogans wife who was from Bombay India. It took me all of 1 minute to do a yahoo search to find this answer.

The town of Bombay, comprising township Number One of Macomb's purchase and. all of the St. Regis reservation on the American side of the boundary, was erected from Fort Covington by an act of the Legislature passed March 30, 1833, to be effective on the first of May following. Its name was chosen by Michael Hogan in compliment to Mrs. Hogan, who was a native of Bombay, India.
