First of all, I really hate people who rag on you for making a decision about your own body. Wankers, all of 'em.
Now, some congratulations are in order. You're taking a big plunge. It will look amazing and you will feel so good for having done it. In my own small experience, the tattoo needle felt like nothing more than an electric razor being pushed extra hard on my skin. My tat is on my big toe, and I'm planning on getting another on my wrist. My husband has several tats, and he said the worst one was on ther upper part of his forearm, just below the elbow.
Anyway, good luck and congrats!

Sounds cool as hell! It may hurt a bit more than anywhere else though. The spine is a very painful spot. The nerves are right there at the skin. The most painful spots are on the spine, ankle bone, and under wrist. Hope this helps!
Good luck and happy tattooing!!
And to the one that said"you can't give blood to the needy if you have a tattoo" You are totally WRONG!!!!! It doesn't matter if you have a tattoo or not you can still give blood to save a life!

If it is over the spine, then yes it will hurt more than other areas. Mine is on the shoulder blade, so it didn't hurt as much. Expect for your back to be sore for a bit afterwards, you may get a stiff neck. Its totally worth the pain if its something that you really want and will love for the rest of your life. Just take care to keep sunscreen on it when you are out and keep the skin moisturized so that your tattoo will look wonderful even at an older age :)

I have a tatt on that part of my back and yes it is a pretty painful spot because it's right over the spine ....but it's a tatt and it will hurt no matter where you get it! So if that's where you really want it and the design you want too then go for it! The pain is temporary but the tatt is permanent but to me it's worth it! But you need to decide that for yourself. The one suggestion I have would be to either take someone with you to talk to you during it to distract you or I took my IPod with me for my second one and had plenty of music on it to listen to which helped provide a distraction from the pain. So good luck tomorrow!

Congratulations and best of luck. I used to date a guy that was inked where you're getting your tattoo...he did say it hurt but he was super happy with the results and so i think that made it worth everything. hopefully yours is like that too. I'm getting my first one in 3 weeks on my lower back on the side.....
hope it goes well and hope you love your new artwork...
also to the individual that said u can't give blood. you can't for a year after you get the tattoo but after that, you're free to. Husband donates blood quite often.

A friend got her boyfriend's zodiac sign on the back of her neck, and I got mine on the upper shoulder. Any tattoing is gonna hurt but after a week it'll all be ok. My parents were against it but I was passionate about the design I wanted. Other than that, everyone thought it was sooo cool. For all its worth,it's worth the while. Below are some care tips. And I'm excited for you too. I know I was! Take care.

Yep, I have a tatt on my upper middle back. It felt to me like getting a really bad sunburn slapped. Was not unbearable until the last 1/2 hour or so. Then I just felt like raw meat for a about an hour after wards. Mind you, I sat for 4 hours. The norm is 2 to 2 1/2 hours. My artist said I took it like a trooper. The first ten minutes are tough. It burns for a bit then the bodies natural painkillers(endorphins) kick in and it goes numb. You should be fine :) Hold still and remember to breathe! Hope you love you first tatt. Keep me posted. I would love to see it.

I have a large tattoo of a Geisha in exactly the spot you are talking about. She is one of eight I currently have.
It depends on your pain threshold & how big the tattoo is that you planning on getting as to how you will cope.
I would recommend getting a small tattoo first time round before becoming too adventurous.
I had the Geisha done in two sessions (8 hours all up) as it HURT on the bones on my shoulder!!!!
Good luck & take some support with you :)

I have a tattoo on the middle of my back and one on the lower part. I think the lower tatt hurt more then the middle one. Just know that it is painful but just grit your teeth and when your finished it will be all worth it. There are certain parts of the body that are more sensitive then others.. But the upper back shouldnt be too bad.

BEAUTIFUL. I love this! So so so much. One little suggestion though, to get either the first three lines or the last three lines. It may look a bit crowded if she gets all of that and the wings. Just saying. It would still be amazing no matter what. Best of luck.
