what are you supposed to say when you are greeting another muslim?

I think you can just say 'salam'
I don't know if you could also say 'salam alekoum'-sorry about the spelling!

It depends on the country, but from personal experience, "Hello" or "Hi" work just fine! Shalom is used in the middle east. There are also greeting gestures that vary depending on the part of the world you're in. In America and Europe, do as the locals do--- a smile and a hearty "hello!" In the Middle East, except for Israel (which is mostly Westernized) it's polite to not stare at the opposite sex. You only touch the same sex, and handshakes with the opposite sex are usually frowned upon (this is also true in conservative parts of Israel.)

Stick to what you know, Hello, Good Afternoon Etc is quite acceptable unless you are trying to impress or learning the other culture.
There are tribes in the Amazon region who grab the pen*s of the person they are greeting, would you do that on the high street?

Just say Hello or greetings, while slightly bowing your head. It is how I greet any person. be he Muslim, Hebrew, Oriental, African, American. People are People regardless of nationality or religion.
