Usually you should find out about a camera BEFORE you buy it.
But, here goes...

It's a 6MP point & shoot camera with no manual controls whatsoever.
So, you will need to shoot in Auto or one of the Scene modes...or if you select 'P' Program, you will be able to adjust white balance, exposure etc.

In the MENU, you should set the photo quality/resolution to...6M (Fine).
I would recommend that you buy a MemoryStick PRO Duo...at least 1GB.
You will need this card to shoot 'movies' in VX Fine mode (which is the best and highest quality available).

But, the best advice I can give you is to take your time and read the user manual. Read and follow the different steps etc...one at a time, so you understand. And if you don't understand, then read again and practice as much as you can with the camera.
The links below will go through all the features etc in the reviews.
Have fun!

I have similar Sony model - and looked at the model you bought. Here is a website with a good review.

It explains both the DSC - W30 and DSC - W50

I love the 2 1/2 inch screen to review your shots. Mine is a 4 megapixel - but I only use the 3 megapixal when shooting, in order to get more pics on the memory stick. Takes great shots.
