It makes the shelf life longer, but don't put them into anything straight from the 'fridge. The coldness makes them slow to conduct. Warm 'em up a little before you use them for the best results.

my grandfather always chilled his batteries but I don't know if that holds up these days. Twenty years ago a bettery may have been susceptible to not cool temps but now they should be fine. And then you have this web page that says that batteries lose their charge quicker in cold weather.

Store them in a cool, but dry place. Which means the freezer would be a great option, but it isn't dry. And you don't want battery chemicals on your food.

Yes batteries that are colder generally last longer.
