In the Book of Exodus it says that the Israelites were forced into slavery because Pharoah was worried that the Israelites would become too strong and overtake the Egyptians!

From all indications and writings, for the first 1 or 2 generations there were treated like brother races. Then, for some reason they were put into labor and then made slaves. I'm sure it was a Palace Intrigue (royalty around the throne working overtime) thing, trying to get free labor and wanting to do away with them at the same time.
