Well maybe he is just trying to be nice but usually when a guy says “you look cute today” and he is single it means that he has a thing for you. If he said that then you could of complimented him back. And to let him really know that you are thankful he complimented you say thank you (smile look him in the eyes and bat your eyelashes)

Hello. If your goal is to make a conversation out of it, there is no better way to break the ice than HUMOR. I highly recommend sarcasm and teasing.

Some of the coolest things you can say is this:
"Ok... What are you going to do about it?" and give him a sly smile?

or accuse him in a playful manner of being rude to you: "What do you mean? Do you think that I didn't look cute yesterday" and then, when he gets defensive, tell him that you are joking.

or give him a compliment back by saying: "You aren't looking bad yourself. What are you up to?" and you will be surprised how far this might take you two.

You don't have to say anything. Even smiling is enough. Returning the compliment "you're not so bad yourself" etc right after can seem kinda tacky if you're nervous/don't do it right. A simple "thanks" is all you need to say. And NEVER refuse a compliment, like "Oh but my hair's so gross today" etc. Just accept graciously.

If you feel bold enough, next time you see him say something like "you look so hot in that shirt" etc. if you feel you want to. But by no means feel compelled to return the compliment if you don't truly want to or don't mean it.

sounds to me that you are really asking the question, "what is his motive for making that comment". if not, then saying "thanks" is the right answer. if Im right, then it sounds like you are not sure of how to determine a mans motives which is causing you some fear. There is lots of good info out there. I would recommend 2 books. "boundaries in dating" by henry cloud and john townsend, and another book called "avoiding Mr. Wrong." Never reply negatively, they will stop complimenting. Thanks is always good. If you want to say more then say something like, thanks for noticing or wow that makes me feel really great!

A compliment doesn't necessarily need a compliment as reply unless it is truly honest so don't feel the pressure to reply with a compliment either.

i would say thank you..and then respond with a nice comment about him. but it doesn't have to be a physical feature..something about his personality or some joke he said.
