Armageddon is the supposed last battle between the forces of God and the forces of Satan. It's a Hebrew word. Har = hill or mount. Megiddo = a real place in Israel of that time. Armageddon = the hill of Megiddo.
When the ancient Jews would fight, they would choose the high ground like this, because it gave them a superior strategic military position for the kind of fighting they would be doing. Megiddo became synonymous with battle this way, which is why the author used the Hill of Megiddo as a symbol of the final battle. He was using a term that his readers would have been familiar with.

For the answers to your questions, I would go to the Book of Revelations in the Bible. That book, along with the Book of Daniel and Matthew 24, gives us a description of the end times and tells us the signs of the times.
If I were you, I would go to http://projectrestore.com/requestform.htm and request the book "Bible Readings for the Home". This book is a great Bible study tool, it asks questions and answers them with scripture. A good part of the book deals with end-time prophecy and explains some of the prophetic symbolism used.
There are MANY, many "ideas" and "maybes" out there concerning the end times that were supposedly created by Christians, but the only way you'll find the truth is by going to the Bible for the answer. I can tell you right now that the work of fiction called "Left Behind" is uncsriptural and should be avoided.
Back to your question: The term "Armageddon" has been used to describe the end of the earth. I cannot stress how important it is for you to go to the Bible for the answers to the questions you've been pondering. Send me a message on my profile page, and I will try to find you a giveaway library where you can get a book explaining the end of the world using the Bible.
This is a vitally important topic, for the Lord Jesus Christ is coming very soon! May God abundantly bless you as you search for the truth! I will keep you in prayer.

GOD IS NOT GOING TO DESTROY THE EARTH, THE EARTH SOMETIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE WILL BECOME A GARDEN OF EDEN OR PARADISE WHERE PEOPLE CAN LIVE IN PEACE & SECURITY.
ARMAGEDDON IS SIMPLY HIS WAR TO CLEAN THE EARTH OF WICKED PEOPLE & ALL BAD THINGS THAT EXIST, & PEOPLE WHOSE WORSHIP IS UNACCEPTABLE TO HIM.
Why, though, would God wage a global war? Armageddon is closely related to one of his cardinal qualities, justice. The Bible declares: “God is a lover of justice.” (Psalm 37:28) He has seen all the acts of injustice perpetrated during man’s history. This naturally provokes his righteous displeasure. Thus, he has appointed his Son to wage a just war in order to do away with this entire wicked system.
Only God is capable of waging a truly just and truly selective war during which righthearted individuals, wherever they may be on earth, will be preserved. ) And only he has the right to impose his sovereignty over all the earth, for it is his creation. Revelation 4:11.
What about survivors? Indeed, no one needs to perish at Armageddon. The apostle Peter observed: “God, does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) And the apostle Paul stated that God’s “will is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth.”
Consider the good Har–Magedon promises to achieve, godly humanity’s peaceful future on this planet, no more pollution, no more war, no more poverty, no more disease or even death. God promises: “Look! I am making all things new.” Revelation 21:3,4

WHAT is “Armageddon”? Simply put, the term applies to the condition or situation in which the rulers of the world are gathered in opposition to God and his Kingdom in the hands of Jesus Christ. In the Bible book of Revelation, the apostle John saw a vision in which the rulers gather together and take a stand against God in a figurative place called Armageddon (Revelation 16:14, 16).
The Bible assures us that “Jehovah knows how to deliver people of godly devotion out of trial, but to reserve unrighteous people for the day of judgment to be cut off.” (2 Peter 2:9) We can be confident, then, that God will keep his almighty power under perfect control. Only those who defy God’s sovereignty will face his wrath at Armageddon. There will be no inadvertent casualties.—Psalm 2:2, 9; Genesis 18:23, 25.
The Bible aiso tells us that God will “bring to ruin those ruining the earth.” (Revelation 11:18) Clearly, then, Jehovah God’s purpose is not to destroy our planet. Instead, he will remove the wicked human society that opposes his rulership. This follows the pattern he set at the time of the Deluge of Noah’s day.—Genesis 6:11-14; 7:1; Matthew 24:37-39.
Granted, a number of Bible prophecies of the coming destruction are alarming. For example, the prophet Joel spoke of “the great and fear-inspiring day of Jehovah.” (Joel 2:31) God’s arsenal includes snow, hail, earthquake, infectious disease, flooding downpour, rain of fire and sulfur, deadly confusion, lightning, and a flesh-rotting scourge. (Job 38:22, 23; Ezekiel 38:14-23; Habakkuk 3:10, 11; Zechariah 14:12, 13) And the Bible graphically describes a time in which the dead will cover the surface of the earth, left either as manure or as food for the birds and other animals. (Jeremiah 25:33, 34; Ezekiel 39:17-20) Fright will grip God’s enemies during this war.—Revelation 6:16, 17.
Does this mean that obedient worshippers of the true God should be afraid of the astonishing events that will take place at Armageddon? By no means, for God’s servants on earth will not take part in this conflict. Moreover, they will be protected by Jehovah. Still, true worshippers will be awestruck by the fear-inspiring display of God’s power.—Psalm 37:34; Proverbs 3:25, 26.
Significantly, though, the apostle John was inspired to assure us: “Happy is anyone observing the words of the prophecy of this scroll,” including the warning about Armageddon. (Revelation 1:3; 22:7) Can one be happy meditating on Armageddon? How could this be?
God has given us warning message about the imminent “storm wind” of Armageddon. (Proverbs 10:25) Jehovah has provided details about his war in his written Word. Discerning individuals receive the warning gladly, and those who respond positively are happy for having done so. God's desire is, not to terrify, but to give fair warning and lead people to repent and make a determined effort to serve him. (Zephaniah 2:2, 3; 2 Peter 3:9) Those who take such action will be blessed with survival. Hence, we need not fear God’s approaching war. Rather, we can face the future with confidence that “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will get away safe.”—Joel 2:32.

Armegeddon is the final earthly war.
Literally, "Har Meggido," it takes place in the Megiddo Valley (Jezreel Valley) east of Mt. Carmel, North of Jerusalem, south of Nazareth, and west of the Jordan River. Essentially, the valley runs northeasterly from the Jordan River Valley towards Haifa.
Comprised mostly of rich farm land, the valley is also home to a huge military air base.

The dictionary says:
1. biblical battle between good and evil: in the Bible, the battle between the forces of good and evil that is predicted to mark the end of the world and precede the Day of Judgment.(Revelation 16:16) .
2. all-destroying war: any final and decisive war or conflict, for example a worldwide nuclear war

It is a place actually in Israel.
Har (mount) Maggedo is the place the final war is supposed to be, I think at the end of the tribulation before Jesus sets up His earthly kingdom.
