Tell your son that your wife made you do it, but she will try to be really tricky and try to convince him otherwise. As long as he believes daddy, then he will go to heaven. Tell him you don't want to go, but its all your wife's fault.

i think you got the wrong idea. maybe proving how much you love her by pleasing her with something...(you were in bed...right???).
now that you joined the army she's worried and probably a little mad at you for it, if something happens to you (hope not)...she might have a guilt trip, that's all her fault.
and joining the army for proving love, isn't the best way to tell your kid.
you should join the army because of your love for your country... not just for your wife and kid.
why couldn't yo just broadcast your love for her on the radio...or write it in the sky...or a giant billboard saying "i love you".
a little less dangerous than goin to Iraq.

So let me get this straight, she wanted you to prove your love to her, so you decide to leave her for a while? I don't get it...
About your son, tell him you are going there so you can be a hero. Kids like that kind of stuff.
Good luck man, and thank you. Even if your wife is mad(understandably so) many of us appreciate it, and your wife will too when you come home.

Proving your love by leaving seems like a very odd way to prove your love. I would have chose a different path but... I suggest you be truthful to your son and sit him down. Have a father to son conversation and tell him that you will have to be gone for some time but love him and will think of him every day. Spend a whole day with him. There is no easy way, just tell him.

Since you are a family man did you ever consider talking to her before you signed up? It should have been a joint decision. Maybe she is feeling scared, or insecure. Maybe she is concerned about the future. Talk with her and really listen to what she has to say.
As for your son tell him that you are going to be going away to do your job of protecting the country and that you will miss him and his mom. With email you should be able to communicate with him on a regular basis. Good luck.

I have not heard that as a solution before. You really want some advice? Go to the recruiter and tell them that you have changed your mind and stay with your wife and child. Yes you can say you changed your mind even if you have been sworn in. You can only do this once and you can never enlist again.

You tell him that you don't want the bad guys coming here, so you are going to be a hero to keep him and mommy safe.
God I hope your wife is better than I think she is....I will pray for you and your family. Though I would hate to lose a man I love I would prefer he died for what is right than stayed home to keep me happy...bless you.

that was a bit much, yes, but that shows how much you really love your wife. i truly hope you will see her again after the war.
i'm not sure if there is a nice enough term for "war" that your baby will understand. just say that daddy will be away for a while, and that you will be back.

I think she was asking for more of you .. more quality time, more flowery words, more romance.
Its very likely that she is frustrated by your response of taking yourself away from her for a while. I dont think this was the response she was hoping to induce.
You should ask her, and talk to her about it.
