I have a dapple dachshund (i know you're thinking, "what does that have to do with anything??") well, hold on.

i have seen pictures among pictures of endless dachshunds in books, calendars, magazines, blogs, you name it and i can't help but notice ONE thing:

dappies look...thin.

i've come to notice that MY dappie looks unusually thinner than other doxies and i'm beginning to worry.
now, before you claim this as rubbish, i'd like you to take a look at dachshund pictures and see for yourself (grey, black, brown, spots) then compare solids to dapples.

is this normal? is she too thin? or is there really a weight difference between solid and dappled weiners?

another thing, if you're going to be rude and/or immature about this situation, don't respond. save your thoughts for someone else.

thank you!

I didn't actually know anything but I looked it up on the AKC website. Which is how most standard dogs are measured (In the US) by ths is what they actually had to say about Dapple Dashshunds:

"Dappled Dachshunds--The "single" dapple pattern is expressed as lighter-colored areas contrasting with the darker base color, which may be any acceptable color. Neither the light nor the dark color should predominate. Nose and nails are the same as for one and two-colored Dachshunds. Partial or wholly blue (wall) eyes are as acceptable as dark eyes. A large area of white on the chest of a dapple is permissible.

A "double" dapple is one in which varying amounts of white coloring occur over the body in addition to the dapple pattern. Nose and nails: as for one and two-color Dachshunds; partial or wholly self-colored is permissible.

Brindle is a pattern (as opposed to a color) in which black or dark stripes occur over the entire body although in some specimens the pattern may be visible only in the tan points."

I also looked it up on the NZKC and they have no mentioning of size:

"All colours allowed but (except in dapples which should be evenly marked all over) no white permissible, save for a small patch on chest which is permitted but not desirable. Nose and nails black in all colours except chocolate/tan and chocolate/dapple, where brown permitted."

I know you are really concerned about size; however upon looking it up I don't see a metioning of a how large or small a dapple should be. I hope I helped a little. Good Luck.

You probably do not need to worry about it. It is actually better for dachshunds (of all colors) to be of an ideal weight or maybe just a little leaner due to their likelihood for back and joint problems. I work at a vet clinic, and most of the dachshunds that I have seen there are overweight. Even some of the pictures online that I have seen are heavier than they should be. Your dog may also just be of a leaner, more slender build.

You should not be able to see the ribs, but should be able to feel them easily. And you also should be able to see a waist on the dog from the side and from above. If you can see the ribs, the dog is too thin and if you cannot feel the ribs or see the waist from both angles the dog is too heavy.

Wait.. What? 9lbs in just over a week?! The healthy option is loosing between 1-2 kilos per week, but when your too restless to look skinny and wipe away your entire probelms, for the reason that being skinny particularly solves everything doesnt it? So my pal ask for some "pointers and tips" out of your neighbors at the professional ana neighborhood. Comfortable to help.

With any dog if you see the ribs they are thin. A perfect size is when you can barely see the ribs but they are there and you can kind of feel them. If you can't he's overweight. Hope this helped.

The breed looks thin but really is heavy. Is she a standard or mini?

Basically if the ribs can be felt but not seen and the spine can't be seen then she is just fine :o)

It could be an optical illustion as being only colour can make the dog look fuller then the patched ones makes them look small it is the same with aussie sheperherds.
It is good that your dachund is a little smaller as it will be better for her spine. don't feed her more then what she needs.

If you can't see her ribs, chances are that she's just a slender dog. If you're really worried have a vet check her.

I agree with the prev. poster. You should be able to feel her ribs and spine with a little pressure,, but not see them.
