I really liked the subcompacts while I was in Europe for 4 months. I need a car now that I'm back in the US. I want a subcompact but the ones here are kind of expensive.
I was wondering, are the European subcompacts like the Renault Clio cheaper than the ones available in the US?
How can I buy a European subcompact that complies with US regulations and not have to pay for expensive importation and shipping?

No one imports economy cars because the costs of shipping and meeting emissions requirements would drive the cost up. You can not do this cheaply. Most people export cars to countries with LESS stringent regulations than the U.S. Besides, you would have to wait for parts when that vehicle broke down anyway.

The car will be taxed here no matter what. Then it must pass the stringent US safety regulations here that are non existent in Europe. All in all, it's usually not worth it. If the car isn't being sold here yet there is usually a good reason why. Safety regulations here are usually much more stringent.
