The Add/Remove program will not list programs to be removed. I am using Win XP SP 2. It is updated. The solutions on the Microsoft site don't seem to apply since the file mentioned in the systems folder is present.

Try reinstalling that application again, then try add/remove programs. If not, go to the program files directory and find the uninstall file for the application. If still not, delete the registry by going to Start > Run > type in regedit, HKLM > SOFTWARE > Application Name. Delete the whole registry key. Then delete the entire directory inside Program Files. Check Common Files folder.
Lastly, go to Run > type in msconfig, go to startup tab, disable (uncheck) the application you don't want to run. Last but not least, delete the application from the Startup menu of the All programs menu. Good luck.

try a reboot, sometimes it takes that list a long time to populate if you have a bunch of stuff running on your machine.
