My boyfriend and I were watching tv the other day and a Trojan Condom commercial came on and he asked "why, WHY! Would Trojan actually choose the Trojans to be their mascots?!" It is kind of wierd if you really think about it. They made a horse, and hid inside it and killed all the Troy people....doesn't make sense.
Anybody know why they did it?

To clarify, my question is why did Trojan Condoms choose the Trojans.

NOT why did the Trojans sneak into Troy in a horse!

Please allow me to remind you and clarify that it was the Greeks who snicked into Troy in the horse (Odysseus was the one who came up with the idea). The Trojans were the people of Troy and did not slaughter them selves...
To answer your question, perhaps the whole idea is based in the notion of "threat containment" (the threat within the horse, the threat within the condom), in addition to the other notions mentioned by the rest of the answers.
Moreover, an additional reason could be that this name is/was recognizable by the general public, especially a few decades ago when epic films were popular.
Furthermore, from a historic perspective, Troy put up a formidable defense and Greeks could not conquer them even after 10 years of hard battle. They had to snick in, so: Troy (Trojan)=good defense!

Why would you even have to market condoms? Everybody needs them at some point in time and you can get Trojans anywhere.

For the same reason that football teams choose a name that is intimidating, like Tigers, or Lions, or Wildcats. Trojans signify something big and strong. Wouldn't you want your condom to be strong? I know I would!!

Maybe it's "Hiding Your Horse"? (or Pony, in some cases) :-)
